Anatomy & Physiology 2 Lab Report

A&PII Lab Report Directions:

1. Print the BIO 212 lab Report Rubric and print the Lab Report Format. Find these in Canvas under the Lab section in Module 6. You will use these to write your written lab report, so read them carefully.

2. Please view the handout which has questions, and you will have an excel file with blood pressures and medical histories. You will need to make a graph and data table (part of the exercise) to use in your lab report.

3. There are specific experimental questions to answer in the Journal section of the lab. You need to include the information from these questions in the body of the lab report. Some may fit into the Introduction and some fits better in your Discussion – your choice. DO NOT fill in the questions and add them to the report.

4. Write your lab report following the Lab Report Format and rubric. When you are finished you will need to submit it electronically in Canvas) AND a written copy to me.

Special notes: a lab report includes titles before each section. Therefore you should have a Title page, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion and References.

General Instructions

1. All members of your lab group must write their own lab report.

1. Your report should be divided into the following sections:

1. Title

1. Introduction

1. Methods

1. Results

1. Discussion

1. References

1. Write in your own words; do not copy from the source material

1. Write in the past tense (you’ve already performed the experiment) using the active voice (use I, we, me).

Specific Instructions for each Section

1. Title Page

0. Include your lab report title, name, instructor’s name, A&PII, class day and time.

0. The title should be as specific as possible and briefly state primary topic dealt with for this experiment.

1. Introduction (1-1/2 -2 pages : minimum 500 words double spaced)

1. Background information that will help the reader understand the experiment that you have conducted. Important terms should be defined.

1. Include the Virtual Lab journal questions information in this section.

1. Purpose of the lab should be clearly stated.

1. A testable hypothesis should be included.

1. This section MUST include in text citations from 3 sources (the website, the textbook and one additional source- NOT the lab book). You must use APA format.

1. Methods (1-2 paragraphs of methods)

2. A complete explanation of the materials and supplies that were used to conduct the experiment should be included in this portion of the report.

2. Your methods should cover what you were doing, why you were doing it, and how you were doing it. The number of trials and replicates performed must be clearly stated. The age and sex of subjects should be included.

2. Should be detailed enough so that someone can repeat your experiment exactly as you performed it.

1. Results (1-2 paragraphs plus graphs and tables)

3. All of the data that was collected during the experiment should be presented in a data table (s). Title the data table. For the blood pressure lab you should include two data tables. One is of the average systolic and diastolic pressures for each group (see the table in the website). The second graph table will be for the medical history information for each group.

3. A graph of the average blood pressure data is required. Make sure that the graph is appropriately titled and axes labeled. Include a legend if necessary.

3. You should also briefly summarize your results in paragraph form in this section but do not include any analysis (discussion).

1. Discussion (2-3 paragraphs, or more as needed)

4. This is the most important part of your lab report.

4. Interpret and discuss your data and relate back to the background information presented in the introduction.

4. Explain WHY you think you obtained the results you did.

4. Clearly explain whether the results support or refute (do NOT use the word “prove”) the hypothesis being tested. If they do not support your hypothesis, explain why not.

4. Explain what your findings mean and what conclusions you can draw from the data. Sources of error and suggestions for improvement should be included in this section

5. You should list no fewer than three sources, which were used to write your lab report (one should be the website, one is the textbook and the third is an additional outside source)

5. In text citations should be used for direct quotations and ideas taken from a source.

5. All references must be listed using APA format.

5. Wikipedia should NEVER be used as a source.

General Information

The lab report will be submitted to Canvas for a plagiarism check. Include the Introduction, Methods and Discussion sections only.

The complete printed lab report (all sections) will be handed into the instructor on the due date.

The lab report will be graded using the “Lab Report Rubric”. Spelling, grammar and formatting will count.
