question

Consider your company's supply chain management team. What are some of the higher level positions and what are their responsibilities? If you came in as a consultant, discuss some recommendations for change including staffing, policy and anything else you can think of.

Students response

I will highlight the VP of Clinical Supply Chain role within my company. That role is responsible for global logistics, clinical supply chain, clinical business development, Business Technology (IT), Clinical Research, and clinical operations. It is a very visible role within the company on a global level. If I were to become a consultant, there would be several proposals I would provide to the group. First would be staffing, and the redundancies some of the roles have within the department. In such a large organization, there seems to be many grey areas of responsibility that can be better defined.  With better defined roles, the next area I would propose is to bring products to market quicker. I have been in meetings where we have talked about the same topic for 6 weeks with no pertinent updates. It is a culture that happens in many organizations. Too Many Meetings! Having better defined roles and responsibilities will allow for clearer timeline. Clearer timeline will allow teams to bring products to market faster. (There is a similar imitative within the company now to make meetings more effective).  These are the two main proposals I would provide the team. I have worked for all sized companies from small to large. The downside of a large company is the agility to get things done. There are many layers of approvals, potential errors, and hierarchy that slows the process down. Small companies are considered more nimble and flexible to different tasks, likely because most employees “wear many hats” within the company. Thank would be my initial proposal to the VP of Clinical Supply Chain.
