The Perfect Body, No Matter What
Imagine this, a woman driving down the highway, sipping on her venti caramel frappuccino, and she looks up to see the brightest, canary yellow billboard she has ever seen. The picture of a beautiful, tall, and lean model staring back at her, asking, "Are you beach body ready"? How would that make her feel? Would she be inspired? Or would she feel somehow ashamed? How does the advertisement compel someone to feel this way?
The billboard advertisement was a campaign for Protein World to sell their supplements. The billboard posted around 2015 in New York and the United Kingdom. The campaign aimed to promote their supplements to people who wanted the perfect beach body. The campaign used promotional advertising to persuade an emotional and logical appeal to everyone that sees the ad with a model and a slogan.
Analysis
Picture and Layout: Although the ad was simple, it grabbed my attention. It could be because of the yellow background. It is bright and can easily catch the eye of anyone passing by. A life-size model dons a bikini the same color as the background. Her skin is gray, and she is lean, tall, beautiful, and sexy. At the bottom right-hand corner, three supplements are portrayed rather faintly to the side. Instead of drawing attention away from the model? The bold letters of the slogan complete the simplicity of the ad. These bold letters say, "Are you beach body ready?"
Teaching and Text: What makes this ad memorable? How does it engage us as consumers? Could it be the big, bold letters in the ad asking us, "Are you beach body ready"? Alternatively, is it the beautiful life-size model in the center of the billboard.
With this statement, the ad portrays a somewhat of an inspiration, depending on the mood and how you feel. Whether or not you as a person are happy with the way you look. It is relevant to many different crowds; some would oppose, others would feel encouraged. As working mothers, busy with life and kids, are you drawn to the sex appeal of the model? Or would you be intimidated to see such a beautiful model making you feel like you need to work on yourself?
Sales Pitch: The sales pitch in this advertisement is asking you a simple question. Could it be portrayed as a statement? That's statement is "Are you beach body ready"? It is a bold statement. For you to be beach body ready, they want you to try their supplements. If you buy their weight-loss products, the company advertises you can look like the ad's model.
Critique
Evaluation of technique: The simplicity of the ad is a technique the company uses to get its point across. There is not much to decipher on the announcement, except the bold statement it makes. (what is the bold statement, give quotes from the ad) The model in a bikini, alongside bold lettering, and an even brighter question. The sex appeal is what catches the eye. Would this ad have made a point if the model was an overweight person? I think not. They achieved the purpose of the advertisement with a simple layout.
Evaluation Appeal: An audience is essential when it comes to advertisements. Without an audience, there would not be any need for ads. Much like having a product without consumers. The announcement posted as a billboard advertisement. The billboard might have been another technique to capture a different variety of age groups and people in general. It displayed in two of the busiest cities in the world. One is New York, so there was probably the right amount of people who saw this billboard.
Evaluation of the Logic of the Ad’s Sale’s Pitch: The advertisement successfully appeals to some of its target audience. The target audience could be anyone from women, men, fitness enthusiasts. And others. Some people would react differently depending on their situations. For some feminists, they responded in outrage towards the ad. They were calling out the company for body-shaming women who did not emulate the model. There are also plenty of people who sided with the company and how the ad allowed them to pursue "the perfect body, no matter what."
The company's' use of feminine appeal is what draws the consumer to buy their products. As long as the company uses this appeal, it will make people buy their products to feel more attractive, sexier, healthier, and many other characteristics associated with their gender. (Does this ad make a reasonable case for selling that product?)
Conclusion
The advertisements' utilization of technique, sales pitch, and audience appeals, makes the ad a successful one. For using all three of these components, they created something for people to engage and discuss. Because what is the point of an advertisement if no one is talking about it. The use of emotional and logical appeal got their point across. Not all advertisements will use these techniques, but for this ad, it was successful. As a mother and gym enthusiast, I would purchase their products to try.
