Defining the conversation
The internet is one of the most useful things in the present world. Members of the community regardless of their difference in culture, religion, gender, age, and orientations tend to use the internet for various purposes. Different authors in the past and the present have researched and tried to understand the internet from the different overarching point of views. For instance, Kenneth Goldsmith in his article “Wasting time on the internet” tries to demonstrate how the internet is the major thing that makes it possible for people to waste time (Goldsmith, 1). In an overarching manner, Jean M. Twenge in her article talks about the internet from a different point of view. In her article, she demonstrates why the super-connected kids growing up in a less rebellious manner, more tolerant, less happy, and entirely unprepared for adulthood. Despite the two authors having different topics, they share similar themes thus making the two articles to appear like it has a similar conversation. This essay shall hence focus on analyzing the conversation from the two sources and highlight the common themes being presented.
Deborah Frances Tannen is a distinguished American author. She has presented her viewpoint on various events, and as this paper also covers her one extract of debate. She emphasized on the gender issues during the conversation and as per her theory; gender also plays a significant role in describing the whole scenario (Antonia, 2015). Some critics blame her for having a feminist side, but she says the conversational interaction and style entirely depends on the given scenario and environment. Somewhere men are mightier than a woman, and they try to influence their agenda, for which we cannot claim an equitable atmosphere. Tannen has done a lot of research on gender-linked conversations where men and women are involved in a heated debate. She has spent a lot of years on the compilation and analyzing of this kind of data which includes discussions, arguments and the conversations (Dinitia S. 2006). Although, she does not oppose the idea, but her emphasis is on the equitable environment among all participants, including the leader or organizer.

Kenneth Goldsmith talks about social media as the various website pages that people constantly visit to learn about different things that do not necessarily concern them. In the article, Kenneth talks of different social media sites like Facebook and Twitter as the sites that make how to waste a lot of working time through clicking on different websites with intentions of following up international and local stories that he feels are of interest (Goldsmith, 2). On the other hand, Jean talks about social media as a tool that is used by people especially the young generation to promote their social life to the extent of getting addicted to their digital devices. The author talks of social media as tools like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter among other platforms that make the mobile phone users grant the mobile devices massive priorities and attention to the extent of hurting and harming themselves. Both authors' talks of the social media theme from a negative point of view where they raise different ways that social media negatively affects the user's life. For instance, Kenneth demonstrates how he ends up wasting valuable time on social media and Jean demonstrates how young over-rely on social media thus reducing the time that could have been used to learn other basic life tips.
In the two articles, there is a similar conversation concerning how digital devices through the internet promote a high connection. In the article by Kenneth, the theme is demonstrated where he could click articles and videos thus making the information being shared to sink into him. In the article by Jean, mobile users tend to use the internet to access different videos. This makes the two articles to share a similar conversation that the internet has made it possible for people to have a higher level of connectivity. This is an actual realization that has promoted levels of socialization because users connect with people located in far and near places without challenges.
The presence of digital devices and the internet has resulted in massive limited or no use of books and other publication. Jean in her article introduces a conversation that books are dead because from the reality that everybody is using social media to learn about different things means that books are no longer being used (Twenge, 49). Similarly, Kenneth proves that he can access any information through digital devices instead of reading publications like a newspaper to the extent of getting determined to follow-up the story through social media platforms (Goldsmith, 4). The two hence are sharing similar conversations that digital devices and the internet are more effective when it comes to sharing information and keeping a consistent update of the news as compared to publications.
The two conversations are valid especially because they are being based on a different point of views. It is a good thing that Kenneth has featured the specific ways that social media users could be doing unconsciously and ends up wasting too much time that could have been used for other useful things. On the other hand, Jean features how social media is being perceived as s good thing because it is reducing rebelliousness in children and making them tolerant while as it has an unseen negative impact of unhappiness and unprepared adulthood. From the two conversations, the manner in which children are affected by social media and digital devices is more vocal and impactful. The conversation creates a clear picture of the real-life situation that people are familiar with and hence an easy to apply. The more reason is that it is really that many people have suffered due to abuse of mobile devices, for instance, using them while charging and also getting addicted to the extent of sleeping with them as they are placed under the pillow (Twenge, 50). It is a conversation that is acting as an eye-opener and cautioner for the many wild things that people do with their mobile devices, and they end up suffering mentally, emotionally, and physically (Twenge, 54). Nevertheless, even the conversation by Kenneth is also vital as people need to learn of the various ways they misuse time. But again, one would argue and challenge Kenneth's conversation claiming that it is also important to be aware of developing new stories and social media platforms provide a reliable and convenient strategy. Moreover, one would also argue that it is proper to use free time even during working days to relax and social media especially watching videos grants people refreshing and interesting means to relax to reenergize for more work.
It is a fact that social media, digital devices, and the internet have a negative impact on society. However, a greater impact is being felt by the younger generation that has become highly dependent on digital devices to the extent of making sure that digital devices are the first thing they see upon waking up in the morning and the last thing they see at night before falling asleep. It is also a sad reality that a big number of people get lost in social media platforms due to the high presence and accessibility of Internet-enabled digital devices in learning and watching materials that are less important and end up wasting too much time. It is evident that these impacts are causing harm and lowering the quality of life especially in the case where a child would get to adulthood unprepared. According to the conversation, social media, internet, and digital devices are hard to eliminate in the society. But they are not entirely bad as they can be used to reverse the negative impacts that they have led the society too. The main development and focus should hence be on how these elements can be used to overturn the already bad situation to a good situation that the society would be proud of.
