Background

This assignment is designed to evaluate your understanding and application of key concepts from Module 2 on investigative interviews, using the real-world example of Sherri Papini’s interview.  Keep in mind that the key concepts for investigative interviews are also relevant to interrogations, which will be covered in the next module. 

Sherri Papini, a Redding, California mother affectionately known as “Supermom,” reportedly vanished on November 2, 2016, while jogging near her home. Three weeks later, she reappeared with visible injuries and a chain around her waist. Was she forcibly taken, or was she orchestrating a real-life “Gone Girl” scenario? Papini alleged abduction by two Hispanic women who branded her and intended to traffic her, but investigators were uncovering a complex tale of deceit and manipulation behind the scenes.

Respond to the assignment prompts.  Each prompt must include an example from the investigative interview video, accompanied by an explanation of the key concept identified, when the strategy is appropriate, along with an explanation of the key concept identified, detailing when the strategy is appropriate or describing the concept and techniques used to overcome obstacles. 

Explanations of the key concepts must be cited.  For this assignment, utilize only the course sources provided in Module 2 to cite and support your work.  Use APA formatting.  Use the headings provided for each assignment prompt. 

Establishing Rapport 

Analyze how rapport was established during the interview.  What techniques were used to build trust and ease the interviewee? 

Types of Lies 

Identify instances of the five types of lies: direct denial, omission, fabrication, minimization, and exaggeration.  Provide examples from the interview. 

Interview Control Techniques 

Discuss the techniques used by the investigator to maintain control over the interview, such as shunting, precise questioning, and skipping by guessing. 

Overcoming Obstacles 

Identify any obstacles during the interview that were not created by the investigator. Suggest strategies to overcome these obstacles. 

Types and Attitudes 

Describe the type and attitude of the interviewee.  What strategies could be used to address these traits effectively? 

Verbal and Non-Verbal Cues 

Identify verbal and non-verbal cues displayed by the interviewee that may indicate deception or truthfulness. 

Investigative Interview Framework 

Analyze the overall framework of the interview.  What techniques were employed to guide the interview process? 

The Closing 

Describe how the interview was concluded.  Was it effective in summarizing and verifying the gathered information? 

Summary 

Compose a paragraph summarizing your perspective on the detective’s investigative abilities and reflect on how you might approach conducting this investigative interview.  

Length: The response for each assignment prompt should be three to four sentences, including the examples.
