In my opinion, the two most important aspects of classroom management is planning for everything and consistency. There will be various issues that happen within the classroom, or events pertaining to it. There should be a procedure and expectation in place for any given issue. Lack of planning can cause uncertainty and frustration on both the teacher and student/family. Another concept that I feel is important is consistency. No matter what behavioral model or classroom management style we choose; lack of consistency will undermine what we are attempting to accomplish within the given parameters of the class. Without a set standard or response to disciplinary issues, it gives way to inconsistent or unfair treatment. If there is a set expectation and response (whether positive or negative), it allows for students to take ownership and responsibility for actions or inactions. There are no excuses, enables fairness, and reliable rewards or consequences are provided.
