For our Unit 2 discussion, please locate crime statistics about a specific crime (murder, rape, domestic violence, theft) in your area or an area of interest to you (state or community) and the second area of your choice to compare and contrast the findings. Consider how you can use this information would influence the influx or decline of people in your area. What could be done in this area to improve the crime rates based on your findings? Offer suggestions to decrease the threat level of your chosen crime in the two areas you have chosen.
1) In Nashville we have seen a steady population growth for the last five years. With that growth comes growing pains. In 2014 there were 1541 total robberies reported to the Metro Nashville police dept. The next year that figure grew by 23.36 percent with 1901 being reported that year (Nashville & County, 2016). The increase can be attributed to the population growth of the city. The population growth of Nashville is 6.7 percent over the same period of time (hl & Wilemon, 2015). These statistics show that the more people that one has in a small area the more victims for criminal predators. The majority of the crimes are crimes of opportunity. To combat this type of criminal activity there are two things the police can do. First they need to have a visible presence in the areas that the offenses are likely to occur in. second that they police need to keep an eye of released offenders that are out on probation, parole or bond to make sure that they are abiding by their release terms. This lets that offender know that someone is watching them and that their pervious offense has not been forgotten. The department at this time can also provide those offenders services to find employment and other life needs that are in the community to assist offenders with reentry into the community.

2) The cities that I selected to compare and contrast during this discussion is the City of Knoxville and the City of Nashville. When talking about major city, Knoxville is the city that is closest to me. I reside approximately 30 minutes north and visit Knoxville very frequently. The specific crime that I choose to write about is the Rape rate in both cities. In 2014, the city of Knoxville there were an estimated 135 rapes that took place. In a population of a 100,000 citizens, the 135 rapes that occurred made up 73.2 %. The 135 rapes that occurred in Knoxville in 2014 was a decrease from 2013 total amount of 139 reported rape incidents. Compared to Nashville TN, there were a reported 487 rapes in 2015. This number is based on per 100,000 citizen population. The City of Nashville according to the statistics is 30% higher than any other city in Tennessee. Both Knoxville and Nashville display a large number of crime in many other areas other than the reported rape incidents. With many other crimes being committed along with the number of rapes reported, it would serve as a deterrent to anyone who was seeking interest in living in either city. Some of the things that can be done to improve would be to employ more officers on the street. I believe that with more officers on patrol, it would reduce the crime rates. There are also ways to reduce the risk of becoming a rape victim. Some of those ways are to always travel with a friend, self defense training, limit traveling at night, limit drinking and social outings. I believe that in order to reduce crime rates in these cities, law enforcement must be present and must be taking a proactive approach
