Case to evaluate:

Case 13: Preserving a culture

The case is about a gallery owner, Bob, who have been traveling to Amazonia in search of native artwork. Bob has many interesting in Amazonia basketry and one of his main clients, Artifacts, is also looking forward to make lots of profit from this new business. However, he would have to ask the Amazonia people to modify the design of the baskets and include new colors, so it could suits better the taste of his clients. Moreover, he would like to place a series of larger orders which could impact on the process of manufacture made by the locals. Artifacts is asking Bob to go to Amazonia to ask for new design and to increase the production, however Bob had studied anthropology before and he knows the Amazonia basket designs are not just pleasing patterns, but a strong culture symbolism. The new demand could put in risk the identity of Amazonia people. In addition, would impact on the way how their society is organized, because men and women would have to work together on the production of baskets. Bob seems to be very aware of the consequences and is hesitating to take those decisions.

Generalization Test: Passes. Because Bob rationally believes that their action would only achieve its purpose if everyone with the same reasons acted the same way. Thus, he knows that they cannot impose their believes to another culture aiming to obtain profits.

Utilitarian Test: Passes. Bob is not willing to make a decision that will not benefit everyone. This is, he knows their decision would not aggregate pleasure for all the involved in this action. That's why he is hesitating to ask the Amazonia people to adapt to their demand. In this case, the Amazonia people will not have any pleasure when modifying their work system and manufacturing design. Moreover, they would have their culture threatened.

Virtue test: Passes because Bob is emphasizing the consequences that his new demand could bring to the Amazonia society.

To finalize it is a very interesting case. It shows exactly how sometimes we cannot think only in our own earning, but we do have to think of the pleasure and earns of everyone involved in that action.
