Leadership and Development
What’s intelligent?
· Classic view: ability to absorb knowledge and information
· Gardner:
1) verbal ( communication)
2) mathematical – logical ( problem solving)
3) spatial( ability to understand space and 3D relationship)
4) kinaesthetic (body moving and surroundings; athletics)
5) musical (listen to something that means nothing but recreate it; most musician are good at language)
6) interpersonal (relationship with other people)
7) intrapersonal (something skin to seld-awareness)
- 1), 2) are inherited and environment, school teach it, limited improvement, has something to do with curiosity
Having just 1) and 2) won’t guarantee success; only academic
|
IQ |
1) And 2) |
|
EQ ( handle “I”) : Emotional Intelligence |
a) First, KNOW and recognize, accept and MANAGE your emotion. · “What am I feeling now?” · Business is usually built to exclude emotion. · Not taking emotions away, but to manage them b) 4 big negative: sadness, fear, anger, jealousy c) Best way to deal with fear is to build an action plan; most fear comes from the feeling that we can’t do something d) AVOID “EMOTIONAL HIJACK” (let emotion get out of control, emotion takes over you )- think “it it worth it?” or try to understand the situation e) Make yourself a better person for your sake f) Exercise in positive thinking; energy exercise |
|
SQ (handle “others”) : Social intelligence *To be success with SQ, IQ and EQ are related which means that you need to understand yourself first |
· Understand others’ emotions (only work if your relation with them is based on deep emotion; high trust; not likely because business is more formal) · Read body language ( but body language depends on culture) (body language can be the key for VABEs) · Looking, listening, observation · Grapevine: rumours, informal channel through organization (great leaders need to be about to filter false /rumours) · Understand dynamics in relationships (e.g. who likes who, who hates who, etc) · Empathy: put yourself in other people’s situation. NOT projection (projection= you feel what they feel). You try to understand how they feel · Relationship management: coaching and conflict management, developing people ( need high IQ and EQ to know who you are before you deal with others), not necessarily nice (depends on leadership style: threaten, competition) |
|
CQ ( need for change)
|
· Ability to recognize and understand the need for change · The ability to manage the change and overcome the obstacles · Not many people can do it because of VABE and habits · To manage “change” effectively among staff in the company, let them get involve in the process of designing the change · Need to provide them with benefits (in the long term they will benefit from it), involve them in the change process, give reasons, give training if necessary · Unlearn what you know and learn something new; freeze what people have been doing and introduce things new · Good change management is also good time management · Understand how long it takes someone to digest change and give it time · Two kinds of change: incremental (gradual step-by-step) and discontinuous (sudden big change) · ‘incremental’change leads to smaller problem than ‘discontinuous’ change · To minimize fear of others: (1)let them involving in designing the change (2) provide info about the change to them (3) tell them the benefits you’ll get from the change |
Flow
Being complete harmony with your surrounding
Being in the “zone”, resonance
Characteristic of flow: time distortion, people in the flow seems to forget about what others are thinking(max. you performance that you could do), flow is not about the achieved result, but it is focused more on the freedom and good feeling of doing your best
Another element of flow: people are inside out instead of outside in
In flow, you are doing the absolute best
Dream: external and internal; flow has to do with internal dream (dream for yourself…feel the freedom for yourself…not to show others which is an example of external)
People don’t feel flow when they achieve result; when they in
People experience flow when they are doing what they enjoy
Focus what give you feelings of flow=)
Language of Leadership
· Indentify positive and negative words
· Positive: exactly, definitely, that’s true, excellent, fantastic, we, thank you, please, opportunity, break through, new
· Negative: but, cant, don’t, impossible, stop, problem, difficult, no body, nothing, things start with “in”…inflexible
· Must not be critical, be descriptive (say the fact such as “you didn’t bring the paper” instead of “you are lazy”); when you are critical, you are not socially intelligent, you close the door, you judge
· Say ” I” more: take responsibility for our opinion other than saying a fact such as “Switzerland is a bad country”, create identity; say I think, I believe, in my opinion
Read chapter 13, 20
Chapter 9 to 13 are critical for yourself and exam
Level 5 Leadership : concept approaching to leadership, a process of development from 1 to 5
Good companies have Level 5
3 circle of leadership : individual, team , and task
Level 5. executive:
- one important characteristic- humility겸손 ( humble)- looking at the mirror rather than looking at the window when you place blame; you don’t build an organization around yourself; you look at a long time and see what happens there when you are no longer there; where people say we did it ourselves; when people say “we don’t do it without you”, he’ll say “I can’t do it without my team”
- will: determination to go down the road, be extremely dynamic and stubborn at some point
- the two above are difficult to combine. But combination of the two makes level 5 successful
- can’t be self-center
Level 4. effective leaders (not just vision, but also coaching, affiative…etc) Read Richard
Branson ( he’s a show off; not level 5 )
Level 3. capable manager- organize people and resources he has
Level 2. contributing team member (effective within the group, get yourself involve and have a good result, need to have a good relationship with the team, use your knowledge to make the team effective)
Level 1. highly capable individual (knowledge, discipline); three circle of leadership (team, task and individual)…this one reflect individual
At level 4, your enter leadership
All levels are good and level 5 is critical for real success
