Research Paper Choices

My top three topics for the Argumentative research are; how effective are alternative treatments for cancer? Should the state or federal government put laws into place to prevent bullying? Should parents be held accountable when their children break laws? Each topic is relevant to me and affect my life in one way or another. The first topic is about the discovering the effectiveness of alternative cancer treatments. This topic caught my attention since my step mom died from cancer eight years ago and it runs in my husband’s family. Second topic is concerning the rising problem of bullying, especially in adolescences. As a mother of a ten-year-old boy, I am apprehensive about his wellbeing as he is getting ready to enter middle school. Last but not least, I believe the reason more and more children are violating the law is due to lack of proper parenting, therefore, parents should be held responsible for their kids actions. In the next few paragraphs, I will elaborate more on these matters and make my decision about my final argumentative research topic.

Cancer is spreading like wild fire in the world. A few decades ago, we would rarely hear about loved ones suffering from cancer but now it is a much more common disease. As a matter fact, according to the website www.cancersigns.net, “In the year 2007 there are 7.9 million people died of cancer. […] and the great tragic part are researches and statistic say that the number is lined up to increase to 11.5 million during the year 2030” ("Stats," 2013, p. 1). The reason for cancers widespread is the pollution in the environment and use of chemicals in all the edibles. The medications used to treat cancer also have more side effects than benefits, that is why more and more people are looking for the holistic or alternative medicine treatment methods. In 1950’s, a man named Harry Hoxsey, organized first alternative medicine clinic but was not remarkably successful but seventy five years later, National Institute of Health (Federal Gov. Sponsored report) found “noteworthy case of survival among cancer patients using the Hoxsey herbal treatment”(Ausubel, June 2001, p. 33). This is a clear proof that alternative medicine may take long to take effect, but it is safer than conventional medician and effective.

The second topic, which caught my interest, was the rising bullying issue among adolescents. I believe there should be a federal or state law against bullying. Studies show that 1 out of 4 kids is bullied (Bullying Statistics, n.d., para. 2), and it leads to kids missing school, living in fear, blackmailed by the bully and can lead to suicide. It is parents’ job to raise moral kids and teach them morals, but sadly lately that has not been the case, which is causing the bullying problem. There must be a law against bullying because it is becoming a life-threatening problem for our youth, and it is our job to help and protect them.

The third topic is the one I feel strongly about; I believe parents should be held accountable when their children break the law. I understand in some case parents are innocent, and there is nothing they could have possibly done to stop their child from breaking the law. Maybe the child has had psychological issues, but in most cases, children break the law because their parents do not guide them. I am a mother as well so I can very well relate. I keep a close eye on my son not because I do not trust him but because I do not trust everyone around him. If I do not know what he is doing or whom his friends are, then how can I guide him. I spend time with him and even play video games from time to time so he can be comfortable with me and share anything he likes. If he is playing a game that is not appropriate for him I can restrict him from playing it, for example, he is not allowed to play the games where humans are target like “Call of Duty”. He is allowed to play games where the aliens or robots being shot but not humans. My point is that is the parents need to spending time with their kids, have a strong relationship with them and know what is going on in their lives, so they can prevent them for breaking the law. If the parents neglecting their kids, then they must be held accountable for their kids actions. I also believe that if parents are penalized for their kids’ action, they will try harder to keep their kids out of trouble and raise them well.

In conclusion, The three topics I chose for the Argumentative research paper; how effective are alternative treatments for cancer? Should the state or federal government put laws into place to prevent bullying? Should parents be held accountable when their children break laws? All these topics are valuable to me and relate to my life. I hope to share my views on these topics.
