Theory plays an important role in social work because it is the basis for all that we do. We use theory to help guide us when assessing our clients and intervening or creating our treatment plans. Theory is a system of concepts we use to help us understand and organize observations (Beder, 2000). In social work we use theory to help us understand our client's behaviors in many settings and at different levels including micro, mezzo and macro. Theory brings order to our practice as it helps to explain the way we handle and intervene with our clients (Beder, 2000).
In my introduction video I talked about how I want to work in the mental health field. My clients face many challenges including stigma from others which makes it hard for them to want to complete treatment. We can relate this to theory by thinking about the theory of conflict. The theory of conflict explains that we are in constant conflict in our environments and this is what strives our behaviors. For those with mental illness they may feel that their mental illness is looked down upon and this may cause a conflict within their self on how to approach treatment. There are other theories we could apply to this as many theories can apply to one situation.

The importance of theory is it provides a framework around a system designed to guide behaviors. When used in clinical practice, theory helps anticipate or possibly predict the outcomes. Theory can be described as a systematic set of concepts or an intentional plan to accomplish something, Beder (2000). Regarding the helping professional population, my work will aspire to help, theories such as behavior or operant conditioning can be used to modify unwanted feelings or actions, Meichenbaum (2010).
Through theories such as behavior modification, I plan to work to help others establish healthier boundaries, while strengthening and working towards their own personal goals. Through our work together, instead of facing burnout, they will have an opportunity to increase their productivity and life satisfaction, Institute of Coaching (n.d.). As the they take more active ownership in their lives, they will have an opportunity to shore up their resilience. This will then enable them to continue to assist others.
