When comparing and contrasting the levels of practice between specialty nursing practice and advanced practice nursing, is some areas there is considerable differences within the knowledge base, scope of practice, credentialing, and regulation. Specialty nursing places its focus on a specific area of nursing. In doing so, if a nurse desires, they can obtain certification specific to their area of practice. (Niebuhr, Biel, 2007, pg 171) Some areas of specialty nursing include pediatrics, public health, adult medicine, medical/surgical, women’s health, burn nursing, and many more specific areas. In most cases, specialty nursing practice does not require an advanced degree, such as a of a Masters or Doctorate level. On the other hand, Advanced Practice nurses are registered nurses who have obtained additional education with a minimum of a master’s level degree. (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O’Grady, 2014) As of today, there are four types of advanced practice nurses; nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurse specialists. Because of the extended education, advanced practice nurses have more responsibility within the healthcare system. APRN’s are defined by state law and responsibilities can vary but do include diagnosing health issues, physical exams, prescribing and managing medications. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016)
