The demand for healthcare providers during the Civil War Movement, WWI and WWII called for career advancement and mostly training in nursing, and the advanced nursing practice has involved so much that it has maintained “focus on direct patient care based on sophisticated clinical knowledge, a high level of accountability, and a holistic approach to care” (Kitzman quoted in Martin, 1996, p. 1).  Advanced practice nursing can be referred as “masters prepared and /or certified NPs and CNSs who have” require special knowledge and skills to diagnose and to treat common and uncommon diseases (Martin, 1996, P.6).  However, advanced practice nurse may continue his/her education to the doctorate level while the specialty nurse may be able to work with his/her master’s degree and or require certifications of either oncology nurse, med surgical nurse, a pediatric nurse and so on.  Again, depending on the States the advanced nurse may live, may practice has an additional legislative authority that permits him/her to work independently; to diagnose and treat diseases and to prescribe medications (Griffiths, 2006).

Specialty nurses mostly work in the acute care setting, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers, and usually attain certifications approve by the State Board of Nursing just like RNs. Therefore, with specialty nurse, the “focus of practice is limited to parts of the whole” (ANA, quoted in Hamric, Hanson, Tracy and O’Grady, 2014, p. 1130).  The advanced practice nurse may either work in the acute care settings, community, long-term care facilities and nursing home as well, but receive certification through the national nursing organization and /or the State the practitioner may live. Again, depending on the specialty of the nurses such as nurse midwives may receive certification through American Midwifery Certification Board; nurse anesthetists will get certified from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists and so on (Franklin, 2017).
