1960s & 1970s

1965 – Dr.’s Loretta Ford and Henry Silver created first Nurse Practitioner (NP) program at University of Colorado

1967 – Boston College creates one of the first masters programs for NPs

1968 – Boston based Bunker Hill/Massachusetts General NP Program begins led by a nurse and physician team

1971 – University of Washington begins first family NP program naming it PRIMEX

1973 – Currently over 65 NP training programs exist, National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP [sic]) is created

1974 – Role is aiding in being legitimized when American Nurses Association (ANA) institutes the Council of Primary Care NP, Burlington Randomized Trail Study states that NPs make correct appropriate decisions concerning medical interventions

1975 – University of Colorado has first continuing education symposiums for NPs

1978 – PNP curriculum established by Association of Faculties and Pediatric NPs (AFPNP)

1979 – Currently 15,000 NPs in United States

1980s & 1990s

1980 – More than 200 NP programs available in the United States, Nurse Practitioner Associates for Continuing Education (NPACE) is established, Guidelines for Family NP published by University of New Mexico

1983 – Now approximately 22,000 to 24,000 NPs in US

1985 – American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) established, AANP develops database and attains 100 members by end of year

1987 - $100,000,000 spend by federal government for NP education, AANP takes on liability insurance and affordability for NPs

1989 – 90% of NPs are Masters programs

1992 – AANP works on developing role of NP internationally

1993 – AANP forms Certification Program

1998 – AANP initiates Foundation Scholarship and Grant program

1999 – Approximately 63,000 NPs in US

2000s

2001 – Approximately 82,000 NPs in US

2002 – Acute Care NPs join with AANP, the AANP Network for Research (AANPNR) is created and is the first evidence-based research network for NPs

2003 – Approximately 2007 NPs in US

2004 – American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) publishes paper on Doctorate of Nursing Practice, Approximately 106,000 NPs in US

2005 – NPs celebrate 40 years of practice

2006 – AANP CE providers increased to 16 approved providers, AANP Fellows (AANPF) begins mentorship program

2007 – AANP launches online site for continuing education credits, Approximately 120,000 NPs in US

2008 – Development of online CE tracking, AANP conducts Practice Site Survey, Compensation Survey and Educational Needs Assessment Survey

2009 – AANP conducts Membership Survey, National NP Sample Survey and Education Needs Assessment Survey, Approximately 130 NPs in US

2010s

2010 – Approximately 140,000 NPs in US

2011 – Approximately 148,000 NPs in US

2012 – Approximately 157,000 NPs in US

2013 – Approximately 171,000 NPs in US

2014 – Approximately 192,000 NPs in US

2015 – Approximately 234,000 NPs in US

A small group of visionaries gathered in 1985 in Pennsylvania to discuss the growing need for NPs of all specialties to have one united voice. The AANP was established and became The Voice of the Nurse Practitioner®. It was recognized that national action was needed to secure the NP role in the health care industry. As of 2015, the AANP represents the needs and interests of more than 234000 NPs in the United States.
