With the help of MINDBODY gym management software, Fran

has been able to increase her revenue by 12.2% and keep 63%

of customers coming back. An impressive 86% of her athletes

sign up for class on their own (either online or through the

MINDBODY Connect™ app).

Fran’s Story

Fran Mason started working out in a traditional gym, intimidated by all the equipment. One year

later, after her husband, Tom Whalen, started training in Jiu Jitsu, Fran was motivated to change

her routine. “My husband would come home soaked from an intense workout. I wondered what

that would be like.”

Shortly thereafter, they both started attending a boxing gym where Fran, for the first time in her

life, felt challenged. “I had never had someone push me past the point of discomfort. It was amazing!”

After three years of throwing punches, Fran and her husband decided to try something new.

“I remember looking at CrossFit North’s website and seeing a leather pommel horse and wooden

rings hanging from the ceiling. I didn’t know what they were doing, but I knew I had to check

it out.”

Two years later Fran became a Certified CrossFit Trainer (CCFT) under Greg Glassman, the

founder of CrossFit, and started teaching part-time. “As a result, several students who live in my

neighborhood started encouraging me to open my own gym closer to our residence.”

Fran and her husband opened CrossFit 206 on December 19, 2009, with six clients and now have

over 100. “We started using MINDBODY from day one. I was already familiar with the software

from working at CrossFit North, later named Level 4 CrossFit Seattle, and knew I needed it if I

wanted to successfully manage my business.”

The Results Like all new business owners, Fran began with two important challenges: attracting new students, and keeping them coming back. Here are a few of the ways she made that happen.

“The majority (86%) of our students sign up for classes online.”

Online booking is a must for Fran due to limited space, resulting in class size limitations. She

has always strongly encouraged all of her students to pre-book rather than walk in to ensure

that their spot is reserved. “That wasn’t really done before. At other gyms people could just

walk in and take a class. I was the first in my area to have students sign up for classes online.”

Now having used online booking for several years, Fran wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’m not temperamentally suited to change a workout originally meant for a class of 10 to

accommodate 18 students. Having online booking ensures that my class size stays within a set

range, and that keeps everyone happy.”

“MINDBODY’s auto-email feature has helped keep our revenue steadily increasing since

the day we first opened, and have increased this year by over 12%!”

Fran and Tom use MINDBODY’s auto-emails to follow up with visitors on their experience at

CrossFit 206 and send them pricing information. This communication encourages first-time

visitors to come back, resulting in additional sales and an increase in overall revenue.

“I like using MINDBODY’s automated emails because they save me time, while still allowing me

to edit them to add that personal touch. I also send individual emails to follow up with people

and express my appreciation for them coming to train at my gym. It’s important to me that every

visitor feels valued.”

“I strive to keep my customers happy, and MINDBODY’s wait list feature has helped me do just that.”

Fran uses the wait list feature to notify people of cancelations eight hours before each class.

As a result, she’s able to fill her classes and students don’t incur cancelation fees. “Because

MINDBODY’s wait list feature allows us to set the cancelation alert time, we are able to better

manage our schedule. Now our students are informed of an opening when they’re on the wait

list with ample time before their class starts.”

This is just one of the many ways Fran is able to accommodate her students’ schedules. And as

a result, she has 63% of her visitors come back. “My customers’ satisfaction is important to me.

We’re a community and I like to make them feel taken care of.”
