Discussion 1
The government should in fact ban the manufacture, sale, and use of e-cigarettes. The reason is that even in their advertising, the companies that manufacture these cigarettes confirm that it is dangerous to people with diabetes, depression, asthma, and heart diseases among others. Furthermore, the manufactures say that nicotine is harmful to a person’s body. Also, the manufacture of flavored e-cigarettes can lure youngsters into using them. As such, the best thing is to ban them because of health reasons and the risk of increased use by teenagers.
Discussion 2
In this case, the government agencies are mostly affected by the sale of e-cigarettes. The reason is that they are pressured and urged by WHO to ban the sales of e-cigarettes which means that decreased sales will translate to loss of revenue in form of tax. Apparently, tobacco companies are heavily taxed meaning that they generate a significant amount of money to the government. Therefore, if the sales of e-cigarettes it means that the government loses a lucrative industry from which to generate revenue.
Discussion 3
I don’t think the tobacco company is demonstrating a strategy to collaborate with the FDA. The reason is that these voluntary warning labels emphasize limited use to a number of people who have other illnesses such as diabetes, or heart diseases. They have not mentioned severe health effects that can be brought by nicotine use to those people who have no health problems in the first place. As such, I believe those voluntary signs are used as instruments to prevent severe regulations.
Discussion 4
With regards to the FDA’s input, it is apparent that they have made a little effort to ensure that all information is disseminated to the public before the tobacco companies can sell their products. Case in point, they ensure that all companies state the ingredient of their product, and also ensure that warning signs (with graphic images) are communicated to the public. As such, these warnings should play the role of discouraging potential users from using the e-cigarettes.
