EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: A PRACTICAL GUIDE INTERACTIVE REPORT

You will write a book report that includes not only a summary of key points from the book but you will

also apply the learnings from this course. The questions are there to encourage your reading into further

reflection, and application of Emotional Intelligence Concepts, to interact with the material in a concrete

way that this may better your own EI and give you tools to apply EI in the future.

Include a cover page with name, date, assignment title. Be sure to number each response for each

question and do answer all parts of each question! 2700 words minimum or about a minimum of 150

words per question (total of all your words not including repeating the text/questions below!), single

spaced, and 12 point Times New Roman font. Make sure to cite your sources and include a separate

page with your “Works Cited” list (you may choose the format). The title page does not count towards

your total 2700 words minimum. Please recall doing the minimum does not ensure the maximum credit,

but also recall I care more about the content than simply extra words. Feel free to use sources outside of

the book, just make sure you cite them.

IMPORTANT: All the pages below correspond to the edition ISBN978-184831-422-1, year 2012. I

describe the sections title and the question goes from the beginning to the end of the book, so you

should be able to find what I am referring to in the book even with a different edition and page #. If

not feel free to email me or check with your teammates for quick help! Please number your answer,

you do not need to repeat the text of my questions!

1. Introduction: summarize the book and describe 3 key lessons you learned (max 200 words).

2. Section So what is this book actually about? Read “Remember This”. (P. 4-5) Find an example

relating to the workplace which illustrate the 6 EI components discussed (Mindfulness to Using

emotional reasoning)

3. Section Can emotional intelligence save your life Read “Case study” (P. 9). How did James

Dozier showed Emotional Intelligence? Now think of a work situation where you could use

emotional intelligence in the same manner James did (except for less dire circumstances that

is!).

4. Section Measuring emotional intelligence. (P.13-22). What was your EI score per the book quiz

Do you think you can increase your level of EI? Why and how? Propose some concrete steps to

improve over the next 12 months.

5. Part 1. Section 1. Self-Knowledge section (P. 34). Read “Try it Now” Answer question 1 & 2.

6. Part 1. Section 1. Emotional chain section. Tuning in to How you are feeling (P.44). Read

“Think about it” Write your answer to this activity.

7. Part 1. Section 1. Right above Expressing Emotions (P. 59). Read “Think about it” Write your

answers to those 3 questions asked.

8. Part 1. Section 1. Right above The effect of emotions on thinking (P. 60). Read “Think about it”

Write your answers to those 5 questions asked. Think about what your answers indicate about

your relation to emotions.

9. Part 1. Section 2. Managing your emotions. What is the value in developing emotional

control? Describe a work-related example where emotional control may be helpful. How can

YOU develop more emotional control?

10. Part 1. Section 2. Managing your emotions. What is resilience and will-power? How can they

benefit employees, managers and organizations? Think about an area of your life where you

could apply more resilience and or will power, describe how you can implement a plan to

develop your resilience and will power muscle (we only get better at what we exercise

regularly…). Use goal setting advice from this course and this book as well to answer.

11. Part 1. Section 2. How are your goals and beliefs linked? (P. 93). Read “Think about it” Write

your answers to those 3 questions asked.

12. Part 1. Section 2. After Assertiveness. You have been promoted to a new team leader position.

You realize you are a lot younger than many of the other employees whom will work under

you. Using the advices listed on Remember This. Assertiveness can be…(P. 96-97), write up

what you will say during your very first team meeting to set the tone you will be assertive while

also being a team player. Use Emotional Intelligence 😊

13. Part 1. Section 3. Understanding Others. Describe nonverbal communication and why this is

key to our human interactions with others. Give a work-related example for each nonverbal

communication listed here that communicate a given emotion, and a possible explanation for

what this may means: Facial expressions, Body movements and posture, Gestures, Eye contact,

Touch, Space, and Voice (for example: someone show anger in their facial expression when a

new team leader is introduced, this may suggest an undisclosed issue between those two

coworkers).

14. Part 1. Section 3. Understanding Others. Highly emotional charged situations. Think of a

conflict between two co-workers whom not only do not get along but also disagree on the best

way to accomplish a task they must cooperate on to finish on time. Emotions are running high

and they start to raise their voice. As their team leader, you walk in this situation, please use

the de-escalating highly emotional situations advises on De-escalating highly emotional

situations. Useful tips (P.117-118) to explain how you would proceed to help de-escalate the

situation.

15. Part 1. Section 4. Managing your relationships. Think of your Team meetings for this class

team paper, answer the 4 questions listed on Think about it. Skillful communication (P. 145 or

just above Empowering innovative people and creating rapport). Please note your answer will

not be shared in any way with your teammates, though you are welcome to chat about it with

your team!

16. Part 2. Section 5. Growing importance of emotional intelligence. Read “Case Study” about

Apple (P.161-162). Explain how Apple use emotional intelligence to create a brand like no

other.

17. Part 2. Section 5. Difficult situations in your workplace. Read “try it now” (P. 166). Answer the

7 questions listed there.

18. Conclusion. Given what you have learned in this class, using the simulation and reading this

book, please tell me any thoughts you have on emotional intelligence and how this may better

YOUR career and even life.
