Once Upon a Time: Writing Assignment 2 Chapter 6 Assignment Directions

Imagine that you are an author writing a short story focused on the types of nonverbal communication. These types of nonverbal communication include:

· Face and Eyes

· Posture

· Gestures

· Touch

· Voice

· Distance

· Territoriality

· Time

· Physical Attractiveness

· Clothing

· Physical Environment

Based on this information, write a 1/2 to one-page short story (double-spaced with 10-12 point font) which includes at least three characters. In it, include at least five channels of nonverbal communication used by the characters (see details below).

In your fictional story, decide who does what to whom and when. Include a beginning, middle and ending to the story. Provide situational specificity in your explanation by explaining the time period and geographic location of the setting and the specific situation the characters are in.

Examples of possible themes: A basketball player, referee and coach argue over a called foul; Two parents and their child are walking in to Disney World for the first time; A mom, her daughter and the pediatric dentist at the child’s first check-up; A cashier, their manager and a shopper are arguing about an expired coupon; Three friends at a sleepover playing video games; and A child opening an unusual birthday gift as two relatives observe.

Remember that the story is a small part of this assignment and it may be less than a page; the significant part of this assignment is the analysis, explained below.

The assignment does not include a fictional story.

The fictional story includes 1-2 characters AND/OR is missing at least one element, beginning, middle or end AND/OR time period, geographic location and contextual setting are not adequately explained.

The fictional story includes at least 3 characters AND includes all three elements, beginning, middle and end AND time period, geographic location and contextual setting are adequately explained BUT

In your story, name, define and incorporate at least five different channels of nonverbal communication into your fictional story involving at least three characters.

There are two ways to successfully incorporate the concepts. The first is to name and define them in the story itself, as part of the story. This will make the whole paper, story and analysis, 2-4 pages long. The second is to write a VERY short story (1/2 to 1 page) and then analyze each of the concepts in the story at the end. This will make the analysis 2-3 pages long and the story about 1/2 to 1 page long.

The story does not include any definitions AND the channels of nonverbal communication are not correctly named.

The story includes at least 5 named channels of nonverbal communication and the author provides a complete definition for each one AND the definition and explanation include related sub- concepts and the author provides context for the definition as well as clear explanation connecting each channel to the story AND the channels are chosen from a variety of areas in the chapter.

Incorporate the concepts in the story or analyze them at the end

The submission does not include any analysis.

The definitions and named channels and concepts are "floating" in or at the end of the story rather than being "anchored" to specific examples and events within the story.

Each of the named and defined channels and concepts is clearly connected to an example or event that occurs within the story and the relationship between the example and concept or channel is clear BUT the author does not explain how the definition applies to the event or example in the story.

Each of the named and defined channels and concepts is clearly connected to an event that occurs within the story and the example or event reflects a correct understanding of the channel AND the author attempts to explain how the examples relate to the definitions, but the analysis lacks evidence.

Each of the named and defined channels and concepts is clearly connected to an event that occurs within the story and the example or event reflects a correct understanding of the channel AND the author clearly explains the ways that the event within the story satisfies the definition of the channel or concept. This includes an excellent level of analysis and supporting evidence.
