Major Concepts That Form Basis of the Conservation Model

Conservation describes the way complex systems are able to continue to function even when severely challenged

Wholeness (or holism) provides the option of exploring parts of the whole to understand the whole

Adaptation is the process of change whereby the individual retains his integrity within the realities of his internal and external environment

Major Concepts of Nursing According to the Conservation Model

Person: system of systems, and in its wholeness expresses the organization of all the contributing parts; may be an individual, an individual in a group, or an individual in a community

Environment: the context in which individuals live their lives and each individual has both internal and external environments

Major Concepts of Nursing According to the Conservation Model

Health and disease are patterns of adaptive changes; concept of health implies wholeness and integrity whereas disease presents the person’s effort to protect self-integrity

Nursing is human interaction and goal of nursing is to promote adaptation and maintain wholeness

 Person can only be understood in the context environment, including place and time

Persons are sentient, thinking, future-oriented and past-aware individuals
