Labor is among the very important factors that determine the success of any company and therefore, that makes human resource management a very important field of study. Typically, effective management of human resources is the core to any business strategy and because of this, there has been an exponential increase in the demand for human resource personnel (Aswathappa, 2013. I prefer taking this course as my concentration since the combination of practice, theory, and professional accreditation will make sure that the program gives me the required skills and knowledge needed in pursuing a successful career in human resource management. The program will give me an opportunity to evaluate human resource management practices and issues from a wide range of organizational context and give me the ability to apply them in the practical world of business.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
As an individual, I have great human skills, as I am able to relate well with people. I do manage doing this by being a good listener and always trying to bring out the best in people. In my life, I have managed to be the group leader of various school projects and this role has greatly exposed me to different personalities. When one is a group leader, he or she is in a position of managing different factors and aspects apart from the personalities of the group members. One of the main responsibilities that I had, as a group leader that I believe will be crucial in my human resource management course is the delegation and assigning of duties. I delegated as well as assigned duties in accordance to the competence of my group members. Apart from this, I also played a significant role in ensuring that the teams I headed shared the same vision, mission, and goals. It is important to note that as a manager of human capital, one should ensure that every individual aligns his or her objectives to that of the organization (Medina, 2006. Managing disputes among team members gives me an edge in creating good public relations. As a human resource management student or professional, one should have the needed skills of creating a positive internal and external environment. Sound working environments ensure that the workers feel contented and work towards achieving the common goal of the organization. While heading my teams, I ensured that none of the team members was overwhelmed by his or her own duties. I am a fair individual and I always make a point of looking after the welfare of other people. I believe that through sound human resource management, a person should be in a position of taking care of the employees since they are a very important part of the organization. Noe, et al (2006) posit that employees are very important in any organization and that they always come first. Not catering to the needs of employees leads to unfortunate outcomes like industrial actions that end up tarnishing the name of the organization.
Courses
The courses that I intend to take in order to accomplish my goal are human resource management, employee, and labor relationship and total rewards. Going through these three courses will give me great insight with regards to human resource management. They will give me the knowledge on how to handle different issues that come with managing employees and especially settling disputes as well as encouraging positive work relationships. In addition, through these courses, I will also know when and how to appreciate the employees since this is one of the factors that help organizations when motivating their staff. Typically, I feel that taking this course will be appropriate in my career life as most of its aspects are aligned with my knowledge, skills, and personal abilities.
