Martha`s Table

Non-governmental organization play a key role in moving the livelihoods of the disadvantaged in the society through diverse initiatives. as part of engaging in my class work in the area of social inequality, I set to examine the organization and learn more on how they carry out their operations. I chose to examine Martha`s Table, a charitable organization based in Canada, Kingston, Ontario. I interviewed the organizations director Mrs. Ronda. She informed me that the organizations key focus is on supporting economically disadvantaged people through providing balanced and nutritious meals that are served at their establishment depicted in form of restaurant-style setting.

I found the organization unique in the sense that it provides food to the less fortunate in the society. Most of the NGOs I have come across mostly emphasize on other philanthropic areas such as health, education, and economy. Having an organization that sets up a restaurant provides an inspiration to the society. According to Ronda, the organization focuses on addressing social inequality in terms of income and wealth through diverse initiatives such as supporting the unemployed get jobs as well as the underemployed and low income earners within the society. The director informed me that the organization understands that the unemployed, underemployed or low income earners may not be able to meet their daily needs especially the basic needs of food, shelter and clothing. As such, the organization provides them with shelter for the homeless, supply of healthy meals, and platform to gain relevant skills needed to secure employment.

The information I was given by the director was consistent with class readings especially with regards to the general role of NGOs. One of the key areas I found the organization emphasizes n from class readings was needs assessment. The program needs assessment initiated by NGOs are meant to address the gaps between current conditions and desired wants of the society. The needs assessment is aimed at correcting any deficiency and improving current performance of the organization. Needs assessment provides a pathway for determining the most efficient and effective way for achieving the organizations desired goals. Martha`s Table has been able to achieve this through its extensive needs assessment initiatives that have placed the organization to be impactful in the society.

However, I think the organization needs to work on capacity strengthening as part of ensuring it maintains its vision and mission. It can achieve this through training and development. Capacity development sets forth training objectives based on what needs to be done and the relevant skills required. It will cover identifying needs training and other interventions needed to achieve enhanced performance levels. In addition, capacity strengthening will involve personnel integration. This will cater for the working relationship between volunteers and personnel to identify performance requirements. Key elements to consider will involve examining integration of knowledge, skills and expertise needed in the workforce to achieve the organizations goals. It’s essential that Martha`s Table ensure they focus on performance improvement plans so as to ensure they keep up with the changing industry trends.
