The Four P’s of Marketing

What are the four P’s of marketing and how are they applied to marketing APN practice?

4 P's of Marketing

An advance practice nurses fill numerous gaps in the healthcare system. A shortage of physicians calls upon the healthcare society to ensure patients receive adequate care, which can be delivered by a nurse practitioner (SMith, 2014). In order to spread the word regarding the availability and benefits of nurse practitioners, it is crucial to market this profession. This is accomplished using the four P’s of marketing: product, place, price and promotion (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O'Grady, 2009).

One of the common reasons why patients do not seek the care of primary care physicians, is because there is a lack of primary care access (Hanks, 2017). Utilizing nurse practitioners in areas where access is needed is providing product marketing (2017). This means that the nurse practitioner is making his or her services available to the population. The price of a nurse practitioners service is known to be less expensive than paying for a physician for services that do not require a physician level of care (2009). Placement refers to meeting the needs of the patient; this includes extended hours, walk-in service or same day appointments (2017). Offering these options helps to meet patient immediate needs in order to maintain their disease process and keep them from going to the emergency room. I deal with this on a daily basis in my work.

Promoting the nurse practitioner availability and an explanation of services they provide will allow the patient to make an informed decision on whether they seek the care of a nurse practitioner or seek a physician and even emergent care. Many of the sites where nurse practitioners practice advertises either on billboards, in pamphlets or even on television (2017). I personally have sought the care of a nurse practitioner numerous times for treatment of a urinary tract infection. After having them for so many years, I know the signs of my body. They always treat me with respect and understand that I know my body. They complete a urine test and within minutes, a prescription is given. I am in an out in less than thirty minutes, if there I not a line ahead of me.
