Critical Writing for the Professions
Prof. Kanost
Purpose: Your purpose in writing this annotated bibliography and progress report is
to
Help you figure out
—what sources you will really use in your proposal
—how you will use each source
Persuade your reader that
—you have done sufficient research at this time
—your sources are useful to your project
—you have done sufficient thinking about how you will use your sources
This work will enable you and your reader to have a conversation about what further sources you may need to obtain for your project.
Audience: A professor, supervisor, or client who has an interest in your work’s
quality.
Format: Progress Report
Write a brief progress report in memo format, using the guidelines on page 255 of your textbook. Your report should
—focus equally on the work you have completed and the work you still need to do.
—introduce your Annotated Bibliography.
Annotated Bibliography
1. For every source, provide bibliographical information just as you
would for a References list at the end of a research paper, using APA style.
See the Purdue OWL for details, beginning at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/05/.
2. Write a paragraph summarizing the main points of the source.
3. Write a paragraph that explains how you will use this source in your proposal.
For example, you might say that this source provides background information on the problem which you will propose to solve, so you will use it as you explain the problem in your proposal. Or you might say that this source describes one possible way to solve that problem, so you will present this possible solution as something that you will evaluate before deciding whether you will recommend that your client adopt this solution.
