Objectives
To have students be able to:
Use classical analysis techniques on statically determinate and indeterminate structural systems to:
o Determine support reactions o Determine internal member forces o Determine structural displacements.
Become familiarized with commercial structural analysis software (SAP2000) and general structural behavior
Prerequisites: CE 2060, Structural Mechanics (C or better for CE majors) or Approval of Instructor

Nielson / McCormac, Structural Analysis Understanding Behavior, John Wiley & Sons, 2017
Expected Civil Engineering Outcomes:
An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics through differential equations and science including calculus-based physics, chemistry, and at least one additional area of
science appropriate to civil engineering;
An ability to apply knowledge of engineering including four technical areas appropriate to civil engineering;
An ability to design a system, component, or process in more than one civil engineering context to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic,
environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and
sustainability;
An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems;
An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Course Grading:
Homework 18 %
Two mid-term exams 52 % (26% each)
Final Exam 30 % (No Exemptions)
These weights are not adjusted at the end of the semester. No homework assignments are
dropped and no exam scores will be replaced. Grades are a semester long effort and all work
will be included.
Grading Scale:
90.0% - 100% A
80.0% - 89.9% B
70.0% - 79.9% C
60.0% - 69.9% D
Below – 60.0% F
Exams:
All exams must be administered by a pre-approved proctor. There is a form on Canvas which
must be filled out and approved by the instructor at least one week prior to the first exam. You
will find a list of appropriate exam proctors on Canvas. Exams will be emailed to the proctor on
the day previous to the available exam window. Once completed the exam is to be scanned by
the proctor (NOT the student) and emailed back to me within 24 hours of the completion of the
exam. Any students who are on campus who wish to have me proctor the exam must let me
know. I will only offer a single time to take the exam with me during each time window (usually
the second day). The student must show proper ID to the proctor when they show up to the exam.
You will be allowed 2.5 hours for each exam. You will not be allowed to bring any resources
into the exam except your writing implements and calculator. When relevant, any charts
required for the exam and any additional paper required will be provided by the proctor.

Attendance Policy – Lecture Material
There is no on-campus requirement for this course. All students will be expected to watch all
lecture videos posted under the modules tab and take notes on these videos. To assist in this, a
series of PDF documents containing all of the slides for the semester has been provided. You
will then need to take notes on the slides themselves. I would recommend that you get a 3-ring
binder and print out the entire packet.
Office Hours
Office hours for this course will be held on Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 12:30
PM. Any deviation from this schedule will be communicated via email. Students will be able to
communicate by phone, calling my office phone (864) 656-3317. Students in the Clemson area
may come to my office, 306 Lowry Hall during the listed office hours or may schedule a time
outside these times by email.
If you cannot make it to office hours then you may send your queries via email or may schedule
a call or an office visit. Emails to the instructor will be viewed and addressed during normal
business hours (i.e. 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM on Monday-Friday E.D.T.). Any emails sent outside of
normal business hours will be addressed within 24 hours of when the email was sent except for
weekends. Prompt responses to emails sent after 4:30 PM should not be expected.
The Honor Code
Each student must comply with the Honor Code as approved by The College of Engineering. In
compliance with the Honor Code, the students are not to copy homework from each other or
solutions manual. All exams must be taken within the specified amount of time and only with
the designated approved resources. However, studying and working homework problems
together is encouraged and is not seen as a violation of the Honor Code.
Homework Guidelines
All homework should be done on standard 8 ½” X 11” notebook paper or engineering
paper.
All homework should be done in black ink, or dark pencil or computer print.
Each homework page should contain a heading that contains student’s name, assignment
title, date, and page # out of # of pages.

The online homework submission cover sheet should be completed and attached as the first page of each assignment before submission. It can be found in the Course
Documents tab for this course on Canvas.
Each assignment should be submitted on Canvas by uploading a scanned PDF file that
contains all the pages of the completed homework assignment. Detailed instructions on
how to submit homework assignments on Canvas can be seen in the “Homework
Submission video” in the Course Information tab for this course on Canvas.
All scanned pages should be submitted as one document and checked to ensure that each
page is legible and oriented correctly. Points may be deducted for each page that is un-
readable or oriented incorrectly. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the
correct file is being submitted the first time. Multiple homework submission will not
be allowed.
After submitting the homework assignment, submission will be verified with a receipt but
you should look for a green exclamation point symbol next to the assignment in the
Grades tab for verification of the received assignment. The gradebook can always be
accessed through the Grades tab for the course.
Number grades will be posted in the gradebook on Canvas, graded assignments will be
attached for you to view within the gradebook, and solutions will be posted in Course
Documents. Detailed instructions on how to check grades and view graded assignments
can be seen in the “View Homework Assignments video” in the Course Information tab
for this course on Canvas.
Homework assignments may be completed and submitted on any date prior to the due
date. However, solutions will not be posted early and exams will still be only offered
during the specified time window. The Homework Assignments Schedule can be found in
