Globalization is enabling worldwide business operations, expanding a company’s sphere of influence and entrepreneurship from a localized practice to a limitless one. Being able to buy, sell and trade products across the globe and through the use of outsourcing, globalization provides jobs and improves the economy in small, poorer countries. Contracting work overseas is a low-cost, high-profit advantage for these companies. But outsourcing also impacts overseas workers by giving jobs they wouldn’t otherwise have. While the focus is on making business savvy CEOs of multinational corporations and high-net-worth individuals richer, these individuals are not the only ones significantly affected by globalization. Many low to middle class workers are left without jobs, this increases the unemployment rate for a majority of the American people. While the expansion in trade has brought cheaper imports into the country, the lower cost of goods does not result in a lower cost of living for Americans (Collins, 2015). It is not wholly improving our own economy. Globalization touches the lives of many both positively and negatively – to opine the globalized actions of CEOs and multinational companies for their gain does not affect others is a narrow outlook; as everyone is affected, from the consumer to the jobless and people of all social classes.

Globalization is a complicated issue. Globalization has been beneficial to CEO’s and high net worth individuals as it allows for cheaper labor costs to an organization. Corporations are able to build production facilities in areas where labor and healthcare costs are low and then turn around and sell the finished products in high wage areas is extremely beneficial (Smith, 2007). When profits increase due to the reduced wages for workers, Wall Street then rewards the profitable gains with higher stock prices and the CEO’s get the credit for the success. High net worth people such as institutional investors and other wealthy individuals also take home the “big gains” when the stock prices rise all thanks to the globalization (Smith, 2007). Thanks to globalization multinational companies are having more of an input in political decisions and many think those corporations will begin to “rule the world” due to the gaining power (Collins, 2015)

As an up and coming leader at a large international organization globalization and all that comes with it is an issue that I would tell myself that I need to be well aware of. Globalization will affect how businesses operate and who business is conducted with. The fact that I would already be a manager at an international company means that I would have some experience dealing with globalization. Even with this knowledge it is important to still focus and plan for the future. And the future is always changing. There are five traits that will be important over the next five years to incorporate into my manager role. These traits consist of leading change, having a global thinking and mindset, retaining and developing talent, learning agility and having creativity (Danehl, 2016). These traits will help me to be adaptable to change. No situation is going to be the same. Having traits such as agility and creativity will help with approaching and resolving each situation as necessary.

The globalization has many positive effects on me as the employee. The community of people becomes diverse in many ways which creates opportunities for divergent thinking. Companies today are looking for people who are thinking of the impact they will have on the company and not the potential earnings. I would continue to train and increase my leadership skills and emerge myself into the different cultures to build the best team possible.
