Interpersonal conflict in television
Human interactions witness agreements and conflict on several occasions and such is the norm throughout the globe. However, to ensure continuity in mutual interaction, the manner in which individual deals with disagreements plays a critical role in the relationship. According to Bevan & Sole (2014), the suitable approach requires caution in the deployment of language for use in fostering understanding. In the film, modern family, the characters in the house disagree on some issues. Manny and Luke, for instance, are at loggerheads on the suitable way for handling life issues. Many appeared tidy and organized contrary to Luke clumsy as goofy. Because of their differences in personalities, the possibility of misunderstanding developing becomes inevitable, and as such, they squabble occasionally.
The television series, modern family, shows the two disagreeing on their behavior. Manny blames Luke for being untidy and such degenerates into interpersonal conflict since the latter is unresponsive to the accusations. After watching the interaction of the two in episode, named Hawaii, one gets the idea that Manny and Luke depict the typical reality that confronts households of people of different personalities. They disagree due to their variation in the way of approaching life as documented by Hyperion (2012). According to the setting, the two are not residing together in a room, but Manny dislikes the manner in which Luke operates. He considers the characters untidy and disorganized. On many occasion, the two argue on their perspective of life especially on a matter pertaining orderliness and behavior. Manny makes the decision to solve the misunderstanding by chasing Luke from their premise.
According to the narration, the squabble commences as a conversation on who is straightforward in action only to aggravate to interpersonal conflict. The two disagree on the approach for orderliness as many asserts, ‘Luke can pee in his bathroom, and he detests such.’ Luke responds sarcastically by depicting his capability to multitask when he states that he can pee and brush the teeth simultaneously something that many is incapable of doing. The response does not go well with Manny. The expression on his face suggests that Luke did not use the correct approach in responding to the assertion. Such remarks escalate the misunderstanding between the two. The sentiments imply that Luke overlooked the emotional concerns of Manny when responding to his assertions. The latter was trying to exude humor in conversation only for the message to annoy many.
The decision of kick out Luke is not an amicable solution as it overlooks the real concern. Even though the utilization of the approach in conversation is manifest daily in people interactions, it creates problems. The conversation technique overlooks emotional concerns thus accentuating the possibilities of conflict arising in the future. Based on the scenario, there are possibilities that a character may adopt a language with the intent of arousing humor only to infuriate the other person in a conversation. Manny comes out of the protagonist in the film trying to quell the conflict (Bevan & Sole, 2014).Interestingly, the approach that he exploits creates misunderstanding in the household. Manny’s misunderstanding with Luke is interpersonal because of the view of their obligations at the household.
The first strategy with which many could have dealt with the conflict could have entailed organizing a forum for conversation with Luke the use the moment to air his concern he could have deployed a tone that resonates with the character. However, he opted to deploy sarcasm of which the respondent exploited similar strategy only for the action to degenerate into conflict. Dealing with such situation requires communicating in a setting where both parties comprehend the verbal techniques utilized. Therefore, in the case of Luke, he could have evaded responding sarcastically but called many to a meeting with the intent of addressing the issue of contention.
Another issue in the conflict is that the recipient of the message did not exploit their listening skills effectively. As opposed to deciphering the message as conveyed, they perceived the conversation as intimidation. The speaker used a polite tone, but that did not capture the imagination of Luke, as he was quick to respond to the message. According to Bevan & Sole (2014), conversation demands caution in listening to facilitate an understanding amid the speaker and the listener. Therefore, in the case of Luke and Manny, the exemption of the consideration is the basis of the conflict that the latter failed to solve amicably.
In conclusion, the approach to conversation plays a clear role in understanding on both parties. As manifest in the TV series, modern family, the conversation between many and Luke degenerated into interpersonal conflicts. The two communicated using a modality that failed to yield solutions. Instead, Manny should have used linguistic techniques that encourage understanding. Luke on his part ought to have adopted caution in listening and such could have enhanced a mutual understanding despite personal differences.
