Pharmacological treatment for Substance Use Disorder

Douaihy, A. B., Kelly, T. M., & Sullivan, C. (2013). Medications for Substance Use Disorders. Social Work in Public Health28(0), 264–278.

The article addresses the issues of pharmacological treatment for the substance use disorders by first considering the agents that are available for use in the process. The authors pay much attention towards proving the effectivity of using nicotine replacement therapies over tobacco cessation in the treatment, they are also kept at examining the advances that have been made in the field of medicine development for these disorders. Hence it appeals to the demands of the topic of discussion.

Hammond, C., & Gray, K. (2016). Pharmacotherapy for Substance Use Disorders in Youths. Journal Of Child & Adolescent Substance Abuse, 25(4), 292-316.

The authors of the article address the ways around overcoming the adverse effects of substance use disorders, and they are very specific in the selection of the population used in the study as shown in their topic. They are using the youths who have been shown to be the most affected group with the highest levels of the manifestation of the associated disorders though diagnosis is made at adulthood. The article is important to the topic of discussion as it uses a specific group of individuals in its research.

Simkin, D., & Grenoble, S. (2010). Pharmacotherapies for Adolescent Substance Use Disorders. Child And Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics Of North America, 19(3), 591-608.

The authors of the article review the available pharmacotherapies that are currently used in the detoxification of alcohol, nicotine and other drugs, aversion and substitution. It points out the fact that most of the diagnosis for the disorders are usually conducted at adulthood and therefore explores the development and the evaluation of the pharmacotherapies for the young adults. The evaluation process of the authors is controlled by the medications used in eradicating the substance abuse culture and compliance. This document, therefore, has vital information for the discussion of the topic of interest.

Van den Brink, W. (2012). Evidence-Based Pharmacological Treatment of Substance Use Disorders and Pathological Gambling. Current Drug Abuse Reviews, 5(1), 3-31.

The author of the review begins by summarizing the various information that is currently available on the pharmacological mitigation of the substance use disorders and ties it to pathological gambling. The review utilizes information obtained from randomized controlled trials and the meta-analyses done with regards to the random controlled trials. Its conclusion brings out a summary of the other strategies that can influence the size of the effect of the pharmacological interventions that are available. It is, therefore, an important source of information for the topic of discussion.

Schuckit, M. (1996). Recent developments in the pharmacotherapy of alcohol dependence. Journal Of Consulting And Clinical Psychology, 64(4), 669-676.

The author examines the effectiveness of the reliance on the available treatment methods for alcoholism. The article reaffirms the notion that none of the drugs used in the treatment process of alcoholism has efficiently worked clinically owing to the fact that not everyone responds to the pharmacological treatments that are aimed at eradicating alcoholism from the system of an individual. It is, therefore, an important source of information as it uses a specific substance that is often abused.

Heffner, J. L., Tran, G. Q., Johnson, C. S., Barrett, S. W., Blom, T. J., Thompson, R. D., & Anthenelli, R. M. (2010). Combining Motivational Interviewing with Compliance Enhancement Therapy (MI-CET): Development and Preliminary Evaluation of a New, Manual-Guided Psychosocial Adjunct to Alcohol-Dependence Pharmacotherapy. Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs71(1), 61–70.

This article is much comprehensive in the amount of information it avails in line with the topic of discussion. It elucidates the combination of the psychological aspects of the mitigation of the addiction to substances with the development of evaluation strategies that can be used in the therapy process. It, therefore, highlights the assisted role that the psychological and the pharmacotherapy can play in the treatment of the substance use disorders by picking on alcohol as an example of the substances that are abused on a massive scale.
