There have been some challenges that the National Security Council has faced. These problems have made it difficult to control and manage the national security departments and agencies effectively. To start with the National Security Council is too big in that it has a large staff member and as a result of this it experiences delays in making policies.  Due to the diffuse decision making that leads to slow decision making. The large number of staff makes it possible for the workers to treat the National Security Council as an extended personal operation thing that makes it lose focus on its core purpose. Furthermore, the council also put a lot of focus on international security issues rather than the national security issues, and this brings about difficult in controlling and managing the national threats (Hoffman, 2016).

The current structure and focus of the National Security Council have not countered the current issues and threats facing the country. This is because we still see these issues remaining unresolved. Some issues should be given a lot of focus on. The first priority should be the issue of southern border security. The border has not yet been put in place yet the current president promised to build a better wall that could help curb illegal immigration which has been a major issue that is affecting the United States. The current wall is ineffective, and this is bringing a lot of threats to the American citizens. This is because a barbed wire fence cannot keep out the terrorists and the drug smugglers. Additionally, an issue that should be given a lot of focus is the use of taxpayer’s money to provide free legal representation to the aliens that are illegal. This grant, therefore, means that there was no much done other than prioritizing the needs of the illegal immigrants over the citizens of America who are law abiding (Fishel, 2017).

Some of the changes that could be made in the National Security Council of Obamas administration include the following.

Reducing the number of staffs of the National Security Council and return to the traditional role of coordinating the policies of national security across the nation and the intelligence personnel. However, the current National Security Council has not placed enough focus on some of the urgent issues that are the big threat to the American citizens. This, therefore, means come the year 2020 America will still be experiencing the threat of terrorism because the current National Security Council has not placed enough focus on eradicating terrorism completely.
