Timed Writing: General Writing Requirements for the Midterm
Now that you have some general information down for timed writing, internal and external components, lets look at things a little more closely for a successful response. Namely, let's look at the following:
Introduction :
As you have been using thus far this quarter, you must have a strong and clear introduction. Your introduction should have your main point (thesis). Why do you believe the way you do? Do you agree or disagree with the prompt? From that, you will formulate your main point. This should be something you can argue. If I say, "I walked to school today," that is not a main point; it is a statement of fact. If I say, "businesses should have standardized uniforms for ease of recognition for customers." That is a main point because it is arguable.
Sub-points:
You have installed your introduction with your main point, your sub-points prove your main point. Why, specifically, are uniforms important? They do the following:
· Add professionalism to a business
· Makes it easy for customers to recognize and receive help faster
· Brands the company
· Cost effective for employees
· Etc ... (you might have some of your own ideas that aren't mentioned here. Also, you would elaborate on each of these points)
Your sub-points are essential to developing your main point. In addition, when used with headings they move the reader seamlessly from one point to the next. If you opt to not use headings, you need clear transitions between paragraphs to move your reader from one point to the next.
Details/Examples:
Now that you have your main point and the writing includes your sub-points, you want to use examples/details to further prove your assertion that uniforms are important to businesses. An example from the sub-points above might include UPS as a company that has branded itself with its use of a uniform. If I say there was a guy in all brown delivering packages, you will immediately think, "UPS!" The color brown is synonymous with UPS. In terms of detail, you might discuss a time when you wore a uniform and how it helped in your workplace or a time when you thought your company could use a uniform. What happened? Why would a uniform have helped the customer? The employee? Etc ...
Counter-arguments:
Should you include your opposition's point-of-view? Yes! A good writer elaborates on why we should agree with his/her position but also mentioned his/her opposition's position. Now, that's not to say you bring up every converse point, but you must mention their primary argument against you. So, again going back to uniforms, what is the primary argument the opposition uses to refute adopting uniforms? Usually, it is individualism and how uniforms stifle the individual employee. Although that is an interesting point, clothing doesn't make an individual and there are other things besides clothing that define people--example? Earrings, jewelry, hair color/style, tattoos, piercings, makeup, shoes, tights, etc. Here, we have refuted the opposition's point and provided examples!
Conclusion:
Your conclusion shouldn't just be a regurgitation of the response. Although you can reiterate the main point, you want to say something new here. If you are discussing uniforms, you may consider giving employees a time line for adopting a new uniform policy. Also, you might offer suggestions for styles or details. You might discuss ramifications for those employees who do not adhere to the new uniform or who will pay for the uniforms--will it be an expense for the company or employees or both? Oftentimes, students just repeat the response in the conclusion when that isn't its intent. A conclusion should be more thoughtful than that in order to be successful.
Previous Common Exam Prompt--SAMPLE ONLY
In the three weeks before Christmas, Target Corporation suffered a major credit breach where, according to Newsweek.com, “hackers stole data from as many as 40 million credit and debit cards of shoppers who visited Target stores” (Par. 2). Now, the company faces at least 15 lawsuits seeking class action status as a result of the cyber- attack. Cardholders who have leveled lawsuits against Target are arguing that, “The suits were filed by people who claim their information was stolen and they allege that Target either failed to properly secure the customer data, did not promptly notify customers of the breach or both” (Par. 4).
Write a letter to the Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman, Edith Ramirez, discussing your opinion regarding Target’s liability or any companies’ liability to its customers. Today, with the proliferation of the Internet and technologically savvy thieves, do companies have a responsibility to reimburse customers if there is a breach that has not affected them financially, but did make their credit information available? What do you believe should happen to companies and to those individuals who privacy has been harmed? Be sure to offer specific suggestions to the Chairwoman.

Subject: Target Corporation Credit/Debit Card Breach
Dear Ms. Ramirez:
I am one of the affected individuals that had their information stolen during the breach that Target Suffered. As a chairwoman of another large corporation I can relate to the stress of having to handle this matter. However, I am not writing to as a colleague but merely a concerned shopper. Target’s mission statement states the following: “Our mission is to make Target your preferred shopping destination in all channels by delivering outstanding value, continuous innovation and exceptional guest experiences by consistently fulfilling our Expect More Pay Less brand promise.” Due to their promising words, I believe target is fully liable of the following:
· Privacy
· Finance
· Reputation
Privacy- This credit/debit card breach has caused major stress and worry for Target customers and therefore Target should take measures in putting the affected customers on a security protection plan free of charge. For the estimated 40 million shoppers affected; Target should set up a “What to do” plan in hopes of securing their information as much as possible. For example if the hackers were only able to obtain the credit card numbers from one person then Target should provide that individual with an identity theft protection plan. This would be to avoid the hackers reaching deeper into the individual’s information and getting a hold of social security numbers, addresses, passwords, and information to other accounts. This would give a small sense of relief to the affected. This will also calm the situation down a bit and show customers that Target is in fact providing outstanding value.
Finance- Target should fully reimburse the total amount that was taken from the victim’s account. This includes any money taken from the account used or money used from a different account. This is a hassle for people who have their accounts connected to automatic bill pay. For example someone who has his or her mortgage payment taken directly from their bank account every month would be forced to cancel because of the risk of that money being used. If one were to leave it and the mortgage company went ahead and took the money the result of the bank charging an overdraft fee for not having sufficient funds is sure to happen. Target should cover that fee as well. This shows Target’s continuous innovation to their customers.
Reputation- Well it is clear that the customer is what keeps a company going it is also clear that companies play a part in keeping them. Target should keep in mind that although they may not feel responsible for the incident, they still have a responsibility in keeping their promise by providing exceptional guest experience to their customers. If target does not show that then their reputation will become negative as well as their revenue will highly decrease. This will happen because customers will no longer have a good image of Target and the experience with the company will lead them to switch over to a different store.
I am well aware that you “swipe” at your own risk, that you can simply take out your money to avoid having it stolen, and that Target can only do much to protect their customer’s security. However it is Target’s responsibility to show their customers that the company takes its promising mission statement serious. The situation is unfortunate to both the company and the affected shoppers but Target should make amends with the customers and make it easier not harder for them during this tough time.
This needs to happen in order to insure Target’s reputation, the customer’s privacy, and financial stability for both. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read my letter. Please feel free to contact me should you feel the need to do so.
Sincerely,
