Lab #4: Fixture Design

I. Purpose

 To gain experience in work holder design

 To learn how to use modular fixturing

 To gain experience in physically executing fixture designs and demonstrating their

functionality

II. Equipment and Materials

 Carr Lane modular fixturing starter kit

 3-D models of parts to be fixtured

 3-D models of modular fixturing components

 Physical parts to be fixtured

III. Procedure

 Analyze the part prints to determine the three machining operations required (labeled

1, 2, and 3). These will determine in which position the part will need to be mounted

on the milling machine.

 Review the Carr Lane Modular Fixturing components that are provided in the shared

class folder.

Part 1.

1. Use the 3-2-1 principle to design a workholder to support and locate the workpiece.

a. Support components must create a rigid, non-deflecting fixture that can resist

the machining forces and constrain the workpiece throughout the machining

process.

b. Use at least two clamping components in each set-up.

c. Component placement must leave the entire cut zone open for the machining

process.

2. Use the provided part files to create master assemblies of your fixture design. You

will use these in Part 2 to build your fixture.

3. Keep a list of Carr Lane components used in your assemblies.

Part 2.

1. Build the fixtures in the MEEL lab.

2. Use the fixture to locate and clamp the sample part for each set-up.

3. Record what modifications needed to be made to your design to successfully locate

and clamp the part.

IV. Assignment

Complete a report detailing the reasoning you used in creating your fixture designs

following the report guidelines. Document your original design and explain any changes that

were required. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of modular fixturing. (Due Week 9

in your lab time)
