Depressants

Depressants are drugs that help with slowing down of the operation of the central

nervous system. When taken in lower doses, depressants may be helpful in causing relaxation

and inducing of calmness. The chosen depressant is benzodiazepines. It possess both

properties of being sedative and hypnotic, and helps with decreasing muscle tone (Nevid,

2012). The most commonly used type of benzodiazepines is Valium, which is key with

helping in the treatment of anxiety, and disorders related to panic, seizures, and the respective

muscle spasms. Regardless of the fact that they are very useful, benzodiazepines has the

ability of leading to one experiencing dependence both physically and psychologically. When

one starts showing dependence, they may start showing withdrawals and even some cases of

seizures if they stop taking benzodiazepines abruptly (Nevid, 2012). Further, chronically

abusing benzodiazepines may make one to showcase the symptoms that necessitated their use

in the first place. The people who abuse these types of drugs may develop insomnia,

headaches, and weakness.

Stimulant

On the other hand, stimulants are the drugs that are key in “stimulating” one’s central

nervous system, meaning that, they are key in increasing the brain’s activity. The most

widely recognized type of stimulant is caffeine. Limited amounts of caffeine are helpful with

ensuring that one stays awake and becomes more alert, through for a limited period of time.

Since caffeine is diuretic, it leads to one using the bathroom very frequently. Further,

relatively larger amounts of caffeine can lead to one suffering from sleep interruptions,

becoming restless, and stand at a risk of experiencing a cardiac arrest. An example of caffeine

is nicotine (Blattner, & Blattner, 2013). There a lot of advantages associated with the drug if

they are taken in smaller proportions. However, consuming them in large amount may also

put one at a risk of developing respiratory paralysis. Nevertheless, nicotine have been

instrumental in helping people in their bid to stop smoking, for example, it is used in making

of gum, lozenges, and also the nasal sprays.

Rehabilitation Centres

There are two key rehabilitation centres currently in the United States, the Solutions

Retreat Organization, and the Addiction Referral Network. The Solutions Retreat

Centre. Besides, it provides one-on-one care for those who are held deep into the addiction of

alcoholism. The organization also helps individuals recover from drug addiction and does this

through a primary focus on the cases that are considered to be most difficult. The firm offers

relatively smaller programs that deals with a lot of one-on-one instances. The major basis for

this is due to the fact that the drug and alcoholics have the habit of hiding in larger groups.

Due to the larger size of the firm, at any given time, it does have about eight clients being

attended to, making it hard for the patients to hide behind any given group. On the other

hand, the Addiction Referral Network has been key in saving thousands of live since its

inception about a decade ago. The key duty of the agency is to provide counselling and

treatment so as to provide proper assistance to the individuals who are suffering from both

alcohol and drugs to obtain a dignified recovery. (Blattner, & Blattner, 2013) The advantage

with this type of treatment is that it enables a 24-hour treatment. Nevertheless, the best centre

for rehabilitation is the Solution Retreat organization. It will enable the addicted to obtain a

quick, comprehensive, and dignified recovery.
