(Meier2011) Three therapy was discussed in this session. I will first start off with Feminist Therapy. A feminist perspective offers the unique approach to understanding the roles that women and men with diverse social identities and experiences have been socializing to accept and to bringing this understanding into the therapeutic process (Meier2011). The video explains Stan current life dictated by society messages on what a man should be. Growing up as a child, Stan experience his parents telling him to be tough and suck it up. However, Stan didn’t know how to play those male gender roles.
(Redgrave2000) The therapist and Stan used bibliotherapy technique. The book was about masculine socialization and help him enhance his knowledge about male gender role a little more. The book also made him realize some stuff as being true about him and brought questions to the therapy session. He also encourages Stan to join a male group at his college because can hear other guys struggle and talk about what it’s like for them to be a man. The feminist therapist often encourages their clients to make the transition from individual therapy to a group format such as joining a support group or political action group as soon as this is realistic (Meier2011). This treatment focuses on gender roles and how it affects our behavior.
Another therapy discussed is solutions focused brief therapy. Solutions is a future focused, goal orientated therapeutic approach to brief therapy developed initially by Steve De Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee in the early 1980’s (Meier2011). The video focuses on solutions to Stan problems. Stan always feels hopeless and down on himself. Stan doesn't want to feel hopeless and down anymore.
The therapist used three techniques: exceptions questions, miracle questions, and scaling questions, in this session to help Stan resolve his problem. (Redgrave2000) Solutions focused therapists ask exception question to direct clients to times when the problem did not exist, or when the problems were not as intense (Redgrave2000). The therapist used this technique by getting Stan to think of time he didn’t feel hopeless and how did it make him feel at the time. Another, the method used was miracle question. The therapist asks, “If a miracle happened and the problem you have was solved overnight, how would you know it was resolved, and what would be different?” (Meier2011). The therapist used this by asking him to imagine going to sleep at night and waking up not feeling hopeless. This technique famous because is made Stan think of ways to no feel.
The third method used was scaling question technique. Solutions focused therapist also use sizing questions when the change in human experiences are not easily observe, such as feelings, moods, or communication, and to assist clients in noticing that they are not ultimately defeated by their problems(Redgrave2000). When Stan starts therapy, he rated his depressed mood to zero. As he continues to attend therapy, his price went to a three because he has learned steps to solving his problems. The therapeutic process rests on the foundation that clients are the experts on their lives and often have a good sense of what has or has not worked in the past and what might work in the future (Meier2011).
Lastly, narrative therapy was discussed in this session. Narrative therapy is a strength-based approach that emphasizes collaboration between client and therapist to help clients view themselves as empowered and living the way they want (Redgrave2000). The video focuses on Stan rewriting his life story. One technique he used was Stan to remodeling his life. He looked at a few things that need to be repaired. Some of the things are already in the process of being renovated, and some are still being worked on.
As a counselor, I will use feminist therapy on someone who is lost about their gender role. Solution therapy will be used on clients who anxiety and narrative will be used for the customer who needs to reconstructions their life. One of the techniques I will use for the feminist is getting the client to join groups or read books. (Redgrave2000) The reason why is because this will help the client have a better understanding of their gender role and if they have any questions they can ask at our counseling sessions. I will also use miracle technique for solutions therapy. This will get the client to realize that they can overcome their past if they just believe in themselves (Redgrave2000).
