Virtual Team Best Practice

Virtual Team Success (DeRosa & Lepsinger, 2010) is based on a 2008 study conducted by the authors involving 48 virtual teams in 16 organizations spanning several industries. As a result, the book is linked to research and appropriate for graduate studies (details of the study are provided in

the appendix). Statistics cited in many of the chapters are taken from this study.

At the same time, the authors have attempted to write the book for practitioners. It is written to be a go-to guide for managers and leaders. Each chapter stands alone. You can turn directly to a

chapter that addresses an immediate need or interest. Note in the Introduction on page xxvii there is a quick reference guide for using the book. You can find a challenge or question of interest and turn directly to that chapter.

The book will be used at a text in GM500, GM501, GM502, and GM503. In each of these courses,

there will be a team Assignment in Unit 4. Sections from this book will be linked in Unit 4. The focus of the Assignment will be determined by the assigned unit reading; however, this book will be used as a part of the Unit 4 Team Introduction as a means of providing best practices and

support for your virtual team. The book will prove to be a handy reference moving forward. Keep it accessible to quickly reference in the future for issues or problems you encounter with subsequent virtual teams.

Team Assignment

In your Northouse text, Chapter 12 describes the psychodynamic approach to leadership. W hile

similar to the trait approach in Chapter 2 and the behavioral approach in Chapter 4, there are

differences with the psychodynamic approach. The trait approach emphasizes specific important

characteristics necessary for leadership. The behavioral approach suggests that the team

management style is preferred. The situational approach in Chapter 5 has an emphasis on linking

style with the needs of the subordinates. The Psychodynamic approach emphasizes personality

suggesting that a deeper understanding of human behavior is a factor in leadership effectiveness.

The emphasis is not on matching personalities; instead, the emphasis is on understanding

personality. Personality is predictable, so an awareness of personality provides an additional

leadership approach.

In GM502, you took the Insights Profile, which is also based on Jungian psychology. Instead of acronyms (ESTP, ISTP, ESFP, or any of the other 13), which may be difficult to remember, Insights uses colors (blue, red, green, and yellow). In the Unit 4 Team Assignment, you will use

your Insights Profile to facilitate improved team performance. You may want to review the Insights W ebcast Library to re-familiarize yourself with this tool:

This link contains a webcast library you can access to better understand your Insights Profile. For this Assignment, please view Session 4: Profile Application. Start at the 3 minute 34 second mark (3.34) with a review of the “Strengths Page” which concludes at 5.50. Then, go to 8.08 to review

the “W eaknesses Page” which leads to the “Value to the Team” at 9.36 and runs to the end of the webcast.

The Insights Evaluator is a personal style assessment that offers you a way to understand your own personality, identify other personality styles, and adapt to different communication needs. The

Insights evaluation will be useful in this course and in your team projects throughout the MSM program.

Your Personal Profile offers information about your probable strengths, weaknesses, and areas of

development. You will also receive the Management Chapter, which describes your management style, what motivates you, your ideal work environment, and how you are optimally managed.

Instructions

For this Assignment, you and your team will prepare a Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation

based on Case 12.1 Dealing with Passive-Aggressives (Northouse 7th ed., page 313). For the purpose of this Assignment, assume that your team has been asked to work with Robert and Lucas in order for them to work more effectively together. In your presentation relate how specific

understanding of a psychodynamic approach can enhance effective leadership in groups and teams.

You may choose to utilize this optional guideline.

Criteria

 The presentation should be a minimum of 12 slides, not including the title and reference slides.

 Each slide is required to also include a script of what would be said at that point in the presentation.

 The slides should be easy to read.

 The introduction slide should clearly articulate the purpose of the presentation and why it is of value to your client.

 Be sure to include a call to action accompanied by a motivational slide that would incline the client to act positively upon your recommendations.

 The presentation should have a minimum of four academically credible sources outside of

the course materials. Your sources should follow proper APA format. (Review the APA formats found in the Kaplan W riting Center. To access the Kaplan W riting Center, select

 Review the Rubric below to ensure all points have been captured in the presentation.

 Note that team participation will be assessed by the quality of each team member’s contribution to the Assignment and the completion of the Team Peer Evaluation Form. The
