Quiz 3—W 2-4 May (\3% of course grade) This quiz will cover material from:

Lectures; on colonialism and postcolonialism; the global city; and conteimpoary architecture (all in course content quiz 3 folder)

Readings: "Introduction: Gentrification, a 'Civilizing' Process” by Faedah M. Totah; “Displacing the Inconvenient: The Incomplete Story of Liberty” by Roger C. Aden ; "Contemporary Art and the Politics of Land Use” by Emily Eliza Scott and Kirsten Swenson; "Introduction” by Edward Dimenberg

Quiz Format • The quiz will start promptly at 9am. • You were previously given 3 questions on d2l on May 19. You are to answer those questions synthesizes readings and lectures. For Questions 2 & 3 you are to add content that you select from the Pritzker lecture. • Each slide will be made visible for 15 minutes. • There will be 2 extra credit slides taken from the Prtizker lecture. All extra credit slides will follow the format of Quiz I To receive an "A” answer of extra credit points you are required at some point to talk about the reading by Emily Scott & Kirsten Swenson. • You will NOT be allowed to have any open notes or books during the quiz.

Quiz Preparation • All lecture slides are available on d2.l. • You are strongly encouraged to google image search the buildings in the reading, not only for studying for the quiz, but more importantly while you are doing the reading. • Review your lecture and reading notes related to the stated material covered at the top of this page.

Questions 1-3

Essay question I fworth 28 points totali; Discuss how architecture is used as a means of power and control by giving examples from rise of modem colonialism ( 18-20 c), the postcolonial reaction AND the chapter by Faedah Totah's “Introduction: Gentrification, a "civilizing Process”.

.jr Essay question 2 (worth 36 points total in 2 parts’): fPart l[ (28 points)— Discuss the rise of signature architecture (or star architecture or architecture as object or consumable project)

in relationship to: I. The rise of Dubai as the "exemplar" 21century city; and, 2. Edward Dimenberg's introduction to a discussion of the work of Diller Scofidio.

to/ampliiy this discussion.

^ Essay question 3 (worth 36 points total in 2 parts'): \ Part I ^28 points)— Discuss the relationships between culture, identity, and architecture as a medium for story telling and/or

empowerment with a particular focus on who is left behind or left out of conventional architecture decisions. Use Roger Aden's "Displacing the Inconvenient” and the work of Haas and Hahn in Rio AND Philadelphia in your answer.

Grading Rubric: Questions I -3 add up to 100 points. Extra Credit questions are worth a total of 10 points each.
