Political Journal Assignment

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Identify and understand the difference between normative, value statements and

empirical, factual statements. Develop your analytical / critical thinking skills.

Reflect on some current political issue/controversy and understand political arguments

for and against it.

Understand how the issue may affect you, your community and the public at large.

INSTRUCTIONS

A. Choose three different articles from the OPINION/EDITORIAL section of a major

national newspaper (NYTimes, LA Times, Washington Post, e.t.c.) that deal with an

issue of political significance (each article should deal with a different issue).

B. Write an approximately two pages long reflection, on each of the pieces.

C. IN YOUR ANALYSIS / REFLECTION YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING:

1. What is the article about? Briefly summarize the article and its main point(s).

2. Does the author(s) distinguish between opinion and facts? Is there an ideological

political bias? (Liberal, conservative, libertarian etc.; give examples)

3. In what way is the issue relevant to the public, California and you?

4. Do you agree with the author’s arguments/ position? Why? Why not? Explain.

5. Your concluding remarks.

*You response should be typed (double spaced) and the original article should be

attached to it.

*Make sure your response is free of grammatical and spelling mistakes.

*You need to submit ALL THREE pieces together.
