Social  Problems  Essay  Guidelines    

The  Social  Problems  essay  is  an  essay  intended  to  utilize  your  sociological   imagination  relevant  to  your  personal  experience/observations/  concerns,  etc.   Students  who  complete  the  essay  will  be  type  a  3  to  5  page  paper,  double-­‐spaced,  12   font  format.  Each  paper  will  consist  of  5  separate  sections  that  outline  a  thorough   discussion  of  the  social  problem  of  concern  using  at  least  5  sources.  These  five   sections  include:       1.  Introduction  of  the  Problem:     Students  will  give  a  brief  introduction  of  the  problem  and  tell  the  reader  the   technical  definition  of  the  social  problem.  Students  may  also  give  a  brief  example  of   the  social  problem  in  this  section  as  well.       2.  Why  is  This  A  Social  Problem:   In  this  section,  students  will  discuss  how  this  particular  phenomenon  classifies  as  a   social  problem.  Tell  who  is  effected  by  the  social  problem,  and  how  this  effect  has  an   effect  on  society  as  a  whole.       3.  What  is  The  Cause  of  the  Social  Problem:   In  this  section  students  will  give  a  simple  historical  account  about  when  this  social   problem  emerged  and  how  it  became  to  be  a  social  problem  in  society.       4.  Solutions  to  Social  Problem:   In  this  section,  students  are  expected  to  propose  a  solution  to  the  social  problem   and  why  this  solution  will  actually  work.  What  are  some  of  the  solutions  proposed   and  executed  in  the  past?  Why  did  these  solutions  not  work?     5.  Conclusion:     Summarize  your  findings.  Again,  discuss  how  addressing  this  social  problem   benefits  society.  What  will  happen  if  the  social  problem  persists  or  gets  worse?     Sources   Students  will  use  at  least  5  sources  to  complete  this  assignment.  These  5  sources   include:   A)  3  scholarly  sources:  Scholarly  sources  include  books  and  scholastic  articles   from  journals  that  you  can  access  in  the  campus  library.     B)  1  website:  Websites  must  also  be  scholastic.  Students  are  not  permitted  to  use   internet  sources  such  as  facebook,  or  other  websites  used  for  entertainment.   Websites  associated  with  libraries,  colleges  or  universities  and  disciplines  such  as   Sociology,  Anthropology,  Psychology  are  considered  scholarly  websites.     C)  1  media  source:  media  sources  include  magazines,  websites  that  are  used  as   media  outlets  for  news  channels,  radio  station  blogs,  etc.          

Formatting   Students  will  use  ASA  format  which  can  be  found  at:       https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/583/01/       Students  can  email  professor  if  there  are  any  other  questions  or  guidelines  are  not   clear.  The  grading  rubric  is  as  follows:         Minimum  qualifications     35  pts   Well  thought  out  and  good  use  of  social   theory,  understanding  of  social  problems
