  • Performance analysis is the process of carrying out various systematic observations to increase the performance of a study subject
  • Its main role is to improve general decision making.
  • In football performance analysis is a very important aspect in relation to coaching
  • Football coaches have the mandate of carrying a performance analysis on their players
  • Thereby, after receiving the needed feedback they are able to make the necessary decisions regarding their team

Performance analysis is quite frankly the process of making various observations systematically on a study subject in order to enhance the general performance of the subject.

Performance analysis is also quite important when it comes to decision making as in football, after the coach has performed adequate performance on their players, he/she is able to come up with a comprehensive decision based on the data that has been collected from the analysis

When it comes to football, we therefore see that performance analysis is a very important aspect in football.

Effectiveness of performance analysis tools

  • Through pre-competition intelligence, coaches are able to tackle the challenge ahead by analyzing their opponent
  • By identifying the weaknesses of the players the coach is able to improve or make decisions to deal with the problem at hand
  • Tools such as visual data is important to make the players understand their roles clearly when they are in the field
  • By carrying out a post event analysis, the coach is able to determine when the players were not performing and identify the areas that his/her team still needs to work on
  • By coming up with a tactic that best suits the team, the coach is able to create a perfect balance in the team.

Before any competition, it is quite obvious that every team makes their own preparation in regard to their opponents. This is where pre-competition intelligence comes in, by conducting an analysis on the opponents strengths and weaknesses, the coach is able to make a decision and plan to be able to deal with problem

Any team, has its strengths and weaknesses, therefore it is important for the coach to carefully analyze his team to be able to improve and do away with problem or at least try to solve it. This is why the performance analysis tools are effective.

Fottball, is generally a visual sport, this means that the decisions and directions made by the coach have to be visual. Therefore visual data is important for the coaches when giving instruction to their players and make them understand exactly what role is while in the football pitch.

After every match, it is important to regroup and carry out a post event analysis. In this way the coach is able to identify the positives and the negatives that the team took away from the game. Thereby they are able to work on the negatives and improve on the positives.

The coach can use the data collected after carrying out a performance analysis to create a system that best suits and works for the team to come out successful after each game.

Case study

  • In our case study we take a look at Chelsea Football Club

  • Chelsea is football team in England based in London that plays in top flight English football.
  • Chelsea by default are known as the top 5 football clubs in England based on their successful achievements over the years
  • Not long ago in the 2015/2016 season, the club was in a terrible run of form and its coach had to be terminated from his job in the process
  • However after a change and a year we see a team with renewed vigor and a great run of form and being at the top of the table.
  • The results in this case are attributed to the new tactics brought in by the new manager.
  • Their next match as we see is against Manchester United.
  • Another English football top flight club

Chelsea is a football club based in London that plays top flight English football. As we all know its recent history, in the 2015/2016 season, the team was in a terrible run of form. One which almost brought them quite close to the relegation zone. Chelsea has been over the years known as the giant teams of England, being able to even win the champions league in 2012. their terrible form was attributed to the poor tactics by the coach who was in charge then. After the coach was terminated and a new one brought in there were tactical changes made to at least steady the sinking ship until the end of the season.

Upon the entrance to the 2016/2017 season we see a team that is very well disciplined and has very efficient tactics thanks to the new coach that was brought in.

As we see a team that is on the top of the table in the English premier league it is hard to find out some of its weaknesses. We can only see the immense strengths it possesses. Chelsea’s weaknesses are seen in its midfield- this is mainly attributed to its formation which is the 3-4-3. This formation mainly takes advantage of the wings this therefore leaves the midfield exposed and vulnerable depending on the formation that the opponent team uses.

In terms of the strengths, it is also brought about by the team’s formation. The 3-4-3 formation is a very efficient counter attacking formation. This means that the team is able to quickly switch from the defensive to attacking mode very effectively. Chelsea have been able to score very many goals using this tactic and in counter attacking moves. The three defenders at the back make sure to create an airtight defense compared to two center backs. Two midfielders protect the defenders while the other wing backs help in both defending and attacking as they run all across the wings. The three attacks help in making he counter attacks to materialize.

Now Chelsea’s next fixture is against Manchester United. Another English football top flight club. This match will prove to be very competitive given that the match is to played away from the home turf. Adding to the fact that the last time these two teams met, ended with Chelsea winning 4-0 and the opponent will be seeking revenge this time round.

Team performance

  • Chelsea’s performance has had a mixture of different results over the recent games
  • They have however, won two of their last games lost twice, drawn twice and won the rest in a span 10 games played prior to the match against Manchester United.
  • As one goes into any fixture as we have seen it is important for the coach to see what formation is required going into a fixture.
  • The coach has to come up with a strategy that will be able to come out with an acceptable result.
  • Chelsea’s coach has been able to stick to the 3-4-3 formation seeing that it almost always brings great results after every game
  • Thereby in this upcoming game against United, its hard to expect him to change his formation.

When we look at the previous 10 matches that Chelsea have been able to play in the premier league. We see them coming out with a total of 6 wins out 10 games and 2 draws with only 2 losses to show for. This is a fairly great result by any standard.

Going into any fixture the coach has to be able to prepare adequately before facing their opponent.

One must be able to analyze the opponents, spot their strengths and prepare the team adequately prepare the team to be able to deal with the threat. By salso spotting the opponents’ weaknesses, the coach is able to prepare the team in order for the them to exploit the weaknesses and use it as a weapon to win the game. Using performance analysis to improve the teams’ performance, the teams abilities are enhanced order to come out successful after each game.

Next Fixture

  • Chelsea’s next fixture against Manchester United is going to prove pivotal for the title challenge.
  • Bearing that in mind it is important to note that this is a must win fixture.
  • Chelsea have to come up with a strategy that will be able to effectively nullify its opponents threats.
  • It also has to capitalize greatly on its opponents weaknesses.
  • The coach has to train his players to be able to read the game to determine the kind of game the opponents are trying to play and counter the problem.

As we have seen, Chelsea’s next fixture is going to prove to be quite the match considering the rivalry that the two teams have between them. However, it is very imperative to not that the coaches must be able to guide their player to not bring their emotions into the game as this is going to prove pivotal over who will emerge he winner in the end.
