Introduction About Open Channel :

Definition : is a type of liquid flow within a conduit with

free surface.

The other type of flow within a conduit is pipe flow.

Difference Between Open Channel and Pipe :

1 - Free surface is present in OCF

2 - Open Channels may have any

shape.

3 - In OCF driving force is the

gravity and the flow direction.

4 - A free surface is subject to

atmospheric pressure.

1 - Free surface is absent in pipe

flow.

2 - Pipes are generally cross

section.

3 - In pipe flow driving force is the pressure force &the flow direction.

4 - No direct atmospheric pressure.

Classification Of Flow :

1- Steady Flow & Unsteady Flow

Steady flow happen when flow at any point (depth and velocity) does not change with time.

Unsteady flow happen when flow at any point (depth and velocity) change with time.

2 - Uniform flow & Non uniform flow:

Uniform flow : When the flow properties, the depth of flow in an open channel remain constant along the length of the channel.

Non uniform flow: When the flow properties, depth & velocity are not constant along the length of the channel is called non-uniform flow.
