Experiment 8.3: Enzyme Specificity

 

 

Format

· Must include all sections specified below. Each section should have a heading.

· Title your paper appropriately. 

· This paper should be written from the perspective of a researcher writing up an experiment, notas a student doing an assignment.

· Use campus data, not just your group’s or section’s results.

 

Content

· Abstract should consist of a brief statement of purpose and results of study.

· Introduction should include more in-depth discussion of purpose, pertinent background information, and a statement of the hypothesis (state expectations or predictions)

· Materials and methods should restate “procedure” from lab book, in pastDo not quote from it. This should be in paragraph form, as should the entire paper.

· Results should include a discussion of the statistical results and what they mean.

· Conclusions should clearly state whether hypothesis was supported or not. Also WHY did we get the results we did, WHAT does it mean to the larger world?

· Works cited should include at least two NO “.com” or “.net” internet sites, including Wikipedia.  These can be used to FIND primary sources (journal articles, .edu sites, etc).  Any cited article must have an author’s name, not just a web site.

· Remember that this is a formal paper and the writing should reflect that.

At extremely low temperatures,molecules move so slowly that reaction rates can be hampered, even though the enzyme is still properlyfolded and active. At extremely high temperatures, bonds and interactions that exist between the aminoacid side chains (R groups) in an enzyme become disrupted. The result is that the enzyme unfolds, losing its3-dimensional shape, and becomes inactive. This process of a protein losing structure and functionality iscalled protein denaturation. Although temperature can have negative effects on enzymatic activity, there is
