RUNNING HEAD: LITERATURE REVIEW
WELCOME TO THE WRITING CENTER
April 27, 2017, Hello, Zoeleni - Welcome to the Writing Center! It’s great that you’ve found us and have decided to pay us a visit. My name is James and I’ll be working with you today. I see from your Writing Center form that you’d like some general guidance with the structure of your paper, and would like to focus on some common challenge areas (APA, content, clarity, etc.) throughout the paper.
Okay! – Great. I can certainly help with that. As I review, I also keep an eye out for other familiar challenge areas for students, like run-ons, “wordiness,” paragraph-construction, clarity, formatting, and organization. – I try to keep an eye out for just about everything I can. I know that you’re new to the Writing Center, so let me tell you a bit about how it works. While the Writing Center doesn’t provide “copy-editing” services (we don’t go through papers and “fix” them), we do offer helpful suggestions and try to point writers in the right direction.
I’ll absolutely keep an eye out for all the issues you mentioned, and do my best to refer you to resources that will help to further clarify. I read through the assignment information you included and have a pretty good idea what issues this paper is supposed to address. I’ll try to focus my review on addressing some of those specific issues, too.
And, do keep in mind, that Writing Instructor review meetings such at these are always limited to only 30 min per review. I’ll get to as much of your paper as I can, but may not be able to provide in-depth comments for the entire thing. If you would like to access additional resources, I would encourage you to visit the Walden Writing Center website, which is full of lots of great information. Okay! Let’s take a look…!
COURSE PROJECT: PART 2- LITERATURE REVIEW
Zoeleni Kamara Comment by James A. Horwitz: This title page has a lot of the required content for a proper title page, however, you may want to look at Walden’s APA-paper template for another reference on how title pages can be crafted. Here is a helpful link the APA-paper template on the Walden Writing website. – Take a look and download the template to your desktop for a comparison. I think you’ll find using, and referring, to this model very helpful for your future writing.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) can be broadly defined as a urinary tract infection affecting any part of the urinary system, including the urethra, bladder, uterus and the kidney as defined (Saint, 2015). Unlike most common urinary tract infections, catheter urinary infections are acquired in health care facilities. Catheter acquired infections sources are about are about 20% in acute health facilities and about 50% in long term health facilities this is according to. The most effective way to reduce catheter infection is to reduce the use of catheter in clinics and, if necessary, to use catheter it should be discontinued as soon as clinically feasible. Infection(This does not seem like the correct word. Perhaps you meant “intervention.”) programs to control catheter urinary infections, include health facilities to monitor its use, coming up with appropriate indicators of catheter and its complications. Comment by James A. Horwitz: Does that mean this is where they are caused? The language here is a little unclear. Can you revise this a bit? Comment by James A. Horwitz: The wording here needs to be revised so it’s less confusing.
Catheter urinary tract infections can be addressed in different perspectives, which include Comment by James A. Horwitz: This is good information for the paper, but I feel having a list like this floating in between main sections may be a little confusing for the reader. – I would suggest moving this information into the body of another section further down and/or merely presenting the information as a numbered list within a sentence, e.g. 1) aaa 2) aaaa, and 3) aaaa. – See what you’ld like to do with this as you revise. – I do feel this needs to be moved.
· Symptoms of catheter urinary infections
· Prevention of catheter acquired infections
· Monitoring of infections related to use of catheter use
Symptoms of catheter urinary tract infections Comment by James A. Horwitz: This first-level heading should be centered. Here is a link to the Writing Center’s webpage on using headings in APA papers. This shows you where headings belong, when they should be in BOLD, and how to arrange them. This is a very useful page that I would encourage you to look at for your papers.
Most effective (common?) and frequent way for transmission of catheter urinary tract infection is the through urethral catheter, which normal inoculate organism and provides a surface for bacterium and cause mucosal irritation. According to (Nall, 2016) Nall (2016), once be a catheter is placed, the daily incidence for bacterium is 3%- 10%. 10%-30% patient who go through catheterization for 2-4 days tend to develop the bacteria and are asymoptamic (spelling?). And about 90%- 100% of patients who go through for long time develop the bacteria. The common systems of CAUTI are particularly similar to the a typical urinary infection. According to (Brusch, 2015) , CAUTI the symptoms might be hard to identify, especially if the patient is still hospitalized as be similar with the symptoms of the illness the patient is suffering from. CAUTI symptoms include the following; Comment by James A. Horwitz: This is how this citation should look. In this instance, the name does not go in the brackets, but the year does. Comment by James A. Horwitz: Which one and where? – This could be made a bit more clear. Comment by James A. Horwitz: The wording here seems a bit off. – Can you take a look at this as you revise? Comment by James A. Horwitz: See comment above on citation formatting. Here is a link to the Writing Center’s page on using in-text citations, quotes, and their general format. It shows you how to use a citation in-text and parenthetically, and shows you the different format for both Comment by James A. Horwitz: This should be a new stand alone sentence, I feel. Here is a link to the Writing Center’s page on Sentence Structure and Sentence Construction. There’s a lot of helpful material in here that I think you’ll find very useful. Do take a look at it when you have a minute.
Cloudy urine, blood in the urine, pain in the lower back, vomiting and unexplained fatigue among others. Comment by James A. Horwitz: This should be moved up so it aligns with the previous sentence.
Prevention of catheter caused infections Comment by James A. Horwitz: This first level-heading should be in BOLD-type.
A number of recommendations to reduce or eliminate the infection caused by the use of catheter they include avoiding the use of a catheter, guidelines in the insertion and maintenance of catheter, surveillance of catheter use and CAUTI, catheter selection and recommendation of quality indicators. Infrastructure to support different programs aimed at preventing-(what?) should be made, such as staff education and adequate staffing together with sufficient supplies. A survey conducted in 15 developing countries showed that with proper handling of catheters, and with proper education of catheter insertion and maintenance, the number of CAUTI were reduced by 35% (Broker, 2006) Comment by James A. Horwitz: Where did this information come from? If it’s from an outside source, it will need to be cited. Here is a link to the Walden Writing Center’s page on How and When to cite. Take a look to review some of these rules to inform your own writing. In this instance, I think this may help a lot. Comment by James A. Horwitz: This citation is done correctly.
Avoidance of the use of a catheter is any other major way of eliminating CAUTI. The use of a catheter should only be considered when necessary and the right procedures and equipments used for insertion. The use of a catheter is considered a must under the following condition; Hourly monitoring the patient’s urine Comment by James A. Horwitz: Here is a link to the Writing Center’s page on How to Paragraph and Plan a paper, in essence, how to structure each paragraph properly to introduce a new idea, present evidence, discuss it, and lead-out. It’s called THE MEAL PLAN! (Funny, I know). --These ideas are the basis for structuring most academic writing. This information is very helpful, and I think you’ll find it very helpful. Comment by James A. Horwitz: Using lists in an APA paper can sometimes enhance discussions greatly, but - at times – can also be distracting. Sometimes it’s hard to know when lists are appropriate. For more information on using serialized lists take a look at the Walden Writing Center page on LISTS here…!

Monitoring infections
Documentation of catheter use and complication on is important in controlling CAUTI in a facility and effectiveness of prevention and allow for comparison with benchmark test. Core data elements should be collected for effective surveillance should include catheter insertion and removal data, urinal catheter results, and monitoring bacteria. The most important indicators should be CAUTI incidences, CAUTI bacteria incidences and the proportion of catheter meting indicators accepted. Comment by James A. Horwitz: Consider adding a heading here to announce this as a new section for the reader. – Headings are very useful because they help to announce topic changes for the reader, and give the paper a natural break to allow the reader’s mind to reset. – Does that make sense?
Monitoring the use of catheter according conducted in German was successful in reducing the cases of CAUTI infections (Nicolle, 2015). Surveillance with benchmarking was reported. Though the level of CAUTI was minimal compared to the other infection reported in health care facilitate. Comment by James A. Horwitz: You should move this paragraph one TAB. Comment by James A. Horwitz: I’m not clear what this was. – Was “German” a study? – If so, this needs a year so it’s a proper citation, i.e. German (2016). – Does that make sense?
Conclusion
Catheters is are an important device associated with most urinary tract infection in health care facilities. The spread of bacteria is also the cause of indwelling urethral catheter. Hence, health facilities should come up, develop, and implement infection prevention program. in In addition they should come with policies to monitor and use practices that minimize infection that come with the use of the device. Most prevention practices should focus on limiting the use of indwelling urethral catheters and promptly removal of catheter when they are no longer required. Comment by James A. Horwitz: The don’t’ just cause infections, but when used properly, do seem to have some benefits. – Do you think that’s true, or no…? Comment by James A. Horwitz: Here is a link to the Walden Writing Center page on using Articles (a, an, etc). I think you may find some of this information very helpful. Take a minute to visit the site and review the information. – It may provide you with some resources for your future papers. Comment by James A. Horwitz: Okay. Good ending.

Thank you for allowing me to review your work today. There are some good, interesting ideas in here, and I can tell you’ve already done a lot of good research. As you revise, you should spend a bit more time outlining your paper, I feel, making sure that each main section follows a clear progression of the main points and ideas you would like to cover. Within the construction of each main section, it would also be helpful to think about the presentation of your main sub-topics, you citations, and conclusion, and all these ingredients add up to create a clear and easy-to-grasp discussion for the reader. While all the sections contain good, useful information, there are just a few spots (I’ve tried to note) that I feel could be enhanced and strengthened by a bit more attention to their organization. I’ve also tried to present some useful tools on APA-formatting, citations, and grammar to help you along as you revise. Hopefully, some of my notes will be of use to you as you continue to work on this draft. – It was wonderful working with you today and we hope to see you back at the Writing Center soon.
