assignment
Battling High Tuition Costs
An environmentally friendly and financially conservative approach
The Goal
Find a solution to help reduce the cost of enrollment
Major Costs - Faculty and staff
Facility, property, and equipment maintenance
Energy
Jason
Hard to cut costs in most areas.
PPE - building, parking lots/grounds, computers/servers.
Present Situation
Purchase energy from Toledo Edison
Small solar array
Mo
There is a small array of solar panels on Dorr, eastside of Douglas that’s purchase a small energy from toledo edison,
The university needs to invest more in this project so that It would be beneficial to have more solar panels to help reduces amount of energy we buy from Toledo Edison,
Potential Options & Selection
Wind powered generation
Solar powered generation
Adam:
Wind - Offered in various sizes and designs but there are minimum required weather conditions. - some effectively operate at low wind speeds and harnessing wind energy from all directions. Lake winds
City ordinances regulate structures in city limits.and It is likely that wind-mills, although offered in various sizes and design, pose permitting issues. May not be as visually pleasing. Wind turbines can also be pretty noisey.
Solar - Can be used easier and taking up less space. Can be done as a canopy type structure above the cars in the parking lots. Solar panels Produce power quietly. Low maintenance and can last up to 20 -25 years.

The Benefits
Reduce cost
Environmentally consciousness
Mohammad
The benefits of having either solar or wind power generation, it will …
Significantly reduce costs of consumption and not reduce consumption itself
Eco-friendly and helps the environment. Collecting solar radiation rather than producing nuclear waste
Environmental Concerns
What are the restrictions and regulations limiting the project?
Height Limitations
Noise Restrictions
OSHA Requirements
Tom
-There are state and local ordinances that must be followed with any project of this nature. Costs and potential delays should be expected.
-In addition to OSHA, many solar installation companies have implemented their own specific measures.
-Key areas of concern for solar include impacts on land, water, air, and noise control. Furthermore, there are city limitations on height for windmills.
-All in all, a solar energy system is safe for the environment, as there are no harmful greenhouse gases or toxins being produced in the air
Where To Build
Secor, in front of Law Building
Grass lot on Douglas
Roof Tops
Engineering Parking Lot
Ayron
Law building - aesthetics and only moderate space
Grass lot - occasionally used for additional event parking. Potential for university to expand and want to use that area for another classroom building--rumored.
Roof tops - decent coverage but difficult to access for installation as well as maintenance
Parking Lot 20 - canopy structures - do not lose parking spaces. Contextually complementary with engineering campus and sustainable energy and engineering tomorrow. With technical labs and over 16 computer labs, engineering has highest consumption rate. Right next to building reduces the distance and amount of material necessary for running a power connection from the point of generation to the point consumption.
Project Details
What and who is needed? 2 options
All inclusive package
Purchase panels and hire contractors
Tom
Most companies offer services providing the product, materials to build, and the man power to do so.
They have experience in this particular project type and reuse contractors-->small learning curve, fast and easy installation
Purchasing panels alone we would have to design the structures(zero cost?), purchase steel, may have to rent some equipment the university does not own if contractors don’t have it. Not as costly, but we think it would ultimately be best to have the supplying company oversee the installation
Funding
University absorbs expense
Grants
Fundraising
Private Investors
Ayron
University - too expensive and not permitted by budget. Roughly $4.5mil
Grants - State and Federal grants that support the implementation of green energy thru “energy” or “environmental” grants. Argument for Environmentally friendly and financially conservative. Other initiatives that fund eco-friendly projects.
Fundraising - community or alumni donations. Support from local businesses and backing the moto “you will do better in toledo”
Private investors - fund the project and charge the university a flat rate significantly lower than what is paid to Toledo Edison
Conclusion
Proceed to University proposal
Propose project to university board or committee
