Title
What was the lab in one sentence.
“Cobalt Spinel”
What spinels did you make?
“Synthesis and Analysis of CoAl2O4, CoCr2O4, ZnCo2O4 and ZnCr2O4 Spinels”
Abstract
A short and concise paragraph
Include the important results
“ Four spinels, ZnCr2O4, ZnCo2O4, CoCr2O4, and CoAl2O4, were synthesized using solid state methods. Each synthesis was a success and products obtained were relatively pure with high yields (ZnCr2O4 97.0%, ZnCo2O4 95.2%, CoCr2O4 96.6%, CoAl2O4 87.8%). Characterization of the spinels with XRD and UV-Vis, showed similarities between the crystals structures of each compound and showed spectral data matching their observed colors (tan-white, grey-black, dark blue, and turquoise) For two of the spinels, CoCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4, the unit cell lengths were calculated using Bragg’s Law and 2ϴ values from the XRD. The cell lengths were calculated to be 8.3097 Å and 4.9722 Å respectively.”
Introduction
Three parts
An introduction to the topic
What is the structure of spinels, etc.
What are some applications, and why are these compound good for that application?
I agree that spinels are used for pigments but why are they good pigments?
Introduce the lab experiment
What are you going to be synthesizing and what techniques are you going to use to investigate these compounds?
Experimental
2 subsections
Synthesis
Easy to repeat
Include molar and gram amounts of starting materials
“White Al2O3 solid (1.153 g, 11.31 mmol) and brown CoO solid (0.847 g, 11.3 mmol) were ground together to form a light brown mixture, which was then heated at 1000 C for 8 hours using 10 C/ minute ramp rates to form CoAl2O4 as a light blue powder, yield: 1.709 g, 85.4%.“
Experimental
Materials and Methods
Include purity and manufacturer of the chemicals
Sample preparation for the instruments you used
Manufacturer and model of the instruments you used
Results
This section is to report your data
Use captions not titles for each figure/spectrum
Describe what you are observing
Did the XRD’s match the data base? What wavelengths are being reflected in the UV-Vis Reflectance
Do not draw conclusion from the data
Discussion
Draw conclusions from your data
What do the results mean?
Make sure to talk about all the topics set out in the lab manual
“Using X-ray diffraction data, it was determined that the resulting ZnCr2O4, CoAl2O4, and CoCr2O4 were pure. ZnCo2O4 contained phase separation due to two different spinel structures being present. Some noise in the XRD data was expected for the cobalt compounds due to fluorescing of cobalt from X-rays. From the XRD data, ZnCr2O4 and CoCr2O4 were indexed; ZnCr2O4 had a cell length of 8.3332 Å, and CoCr2O4 had a cell length of 8.3361 Å. The small difference between the lengths, 0.0029 Å, is to be expected as cobalt and zinc have very similar ionic radii. Both compounds exhibited A, B, or C centering based on the values of h, k, and l for all angle values.”
