===ARTICLE SUMMARY GUIDELINES===

Introduction

To help you better interpret primary sources and complete your portfolio, you will need to

read each assigned journal article and summarize it according to the guidelines below.

Paper Guidelines

First drafts (worth 10 points) will be graded on completeness. Second drafts (worth 40

points) will be graded on accuracy and writing quality; to receive full credit you will need to

demonstrate you’ve made your best effort to fulfill each of the following requirements:

1. Submit hard copies. Drafts are due at the beginning of lecture on the dates listed.

2. Be concise. Drafts should be between 1 and 3 pages in length (excluding title page

and references). Most important points can be addressed in one or two sentences.

3. Use essay format. Papers should cover important methods and findings presented

in the journal article and be written out in full essay form (i.e., not an outline). You

may use headings to organize your writing, but strive to connect your ideas using

segues and other transition phrases (e.g., “these findings show…”)

4. Discuss all aspects of the article. Be sure to cover all major points by:

a. Defining important concepts and theories (2 pts)

b. Stating all relevant hypotheses (2 pts)

c. Describing sample characteristics (i.e., size and demographics; 2 pts)

d. Outlining procedure step-by-step and operationalizing measures (6 pts)

e. Summarizing major findings (i.e., the take home message; 2 pts)

f. Critiquing the study (i.e., discuss limitations and recommendations; 6 pts)

g. Writing in an academic style (i.e., grammar, spelling, and objectivity; 5 pts)

5. Use APA style. Papers must (a) be double-spaced, (b) use 12 point Times New

Roman font, (c) have 1 in. margins, (d) begin with a title page, (e) include a running

head and page number on every page, and (f) attach a reference page. For more
