PROJECT DESCRIPTION
For your Contemporary Society class, you are working on a writing assignment in a three-person group. Each member of the group will research the topic of smart growth and write a section of the research paper. As part of the assignment, you will assist fellow student Diana Rojas in formatting her paper using the MLA format, which is standard for research papers. You will also add a cover page for the group.
GETTING STARTED
Download the following file from the SAM website:
· NP_Word2013_T2_P1b_FirstLastName_1.docx
Open the file you just downloaded and save it with the name:
· NP_Word2013_T2_P1b_FirstLastName_2.docx
· Hint: If you do not see the .docx file extension in the Save file dialog box, do not type it. Word will add the file extension for you automatically.
With the file NP_Word2013_T2_P1b_FirstLastName_2.docx still open, ensure that your first and last name is displayed in the footer. If the footer does not display your name, delete the file and download a new copy from the SAM website.
PROJECT STEPS
Change the Citations & Bibliography Style of the document to MLA Seventh Edition.
Change the case of the title paragraph “Smart growth overview: principles and history” to Capitalize Each Word, and then manually change the first letter in the word “And” back to lowercase.
Cut the first body paragraph beginning with “According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency…” and paste it below the paragraph beginning with “How cities of all sizes…” (Hint: The cut paragraph should become the new second body paragraph).
Create a First Line indent of 0.5” to indent the first lines of the body paragraphs starting with “How cities of all sizes…” and ending with “…continued smart growth practices.”
1. In the second body paragraph, find the sentence “Schools and other community buildings anchor…all stages of life.” Move the insertion point before the period and insert a citation using the source information shown in Figure 1 below.

Edit the citation to add the page number 13.
Create a numbered list from the paragraphs beginning with “Zoning ordinances…” and ending with “Environmental assessments….” (Hint: The list should contain two items.)
Move to the end of the document, insert a page break to create a new page two, and insert a Works Cited from the Bibliography gallery.
Center-align the “Works Cited” heading and apply Calibri font and the Black, Text 1 font color (2nd column, 1st row in the Theme Colors gallery) to it.
Select the entire document and change the font size to 12 pt., change the line spacing to double, and remove the space after the paragraphs.
From the Top of Page page number gallery, insert a Plain Number 3 page number to the header of all pages in the document. Type Rojas, press the spacebar, and close the header view.
Check the Spelling & Grammar in the document to identify and correct any spelling errors. (Hint: You should find and correct at least 2 spelling errors.)
Your document should look like the Final Figure on the following pages. Save your changes, close the document, and exit Word. Follow the directions on the SAM website to submit your completed project.
