Case Study: Kashi

“Nourish People and the Planet with Progressive Nutrition” is the motto of Kashi, stating that they value not just the foods they make, but how they are made, being mindful of sustainable and ethical farming practices. The name Kashi comes from a blend of Kashruth, meaning kosher or pure food and Kushi, the fouder of American macrobiotics. Kashi was founded in 1984 by Philip and Gayle Tauber in La Jolla California. It’s main product was a nutritionally balanced breakfast food made from different whole grains and seeds. Kashi now specializes in breakfast cereals; energy bars, crackers, frozen entrees, pizza and breakfast foods, that emphasize high protein and fiber.

Kashi came under attack in 2012 when a Rhode Island store owner discovered that the grain in Kashi’s breakfast cereal was genetically engineered. Kashi labeled the majority of its products as "natural." However testing revealed that while called “natural” these products could contain genetically engineered ingredients, while those marked “organic” did not. As a result the Rhode Island store owner banned Kashi from his shelves. When customers got wind of the issue, they attempted to call Kellogg to complain. Kellogg representatives denied the allegations. However, further investigation proved the customers right and Kellogg had to take back their initial attempt to discredit the information. The company has now agreed that all their products will contain at least 70% certified organic ingredients within the next three years.
