Leadership Development- Issue in the work environment- Soultions to their problems.
Scenario 1-
(Takes place in break room. Adam just finished making his cup of coffee and Peggy is entering breakroom to make hers.)
Peggy : “Oh hi Adam. How are you?”
Adam : “Good Peggy, how are you doing? Are you ready for yearly evaluations?”
Peggy : “Ah (sigh) yearly evaluations, we go through so much work and all that angst and we still get the 2% that everyone else gets.”
Adam : “Yeah they do give everyone the same raise. You know I’m concerned about you know the path to actually being promoted. Every year I talk to them and ask “what do I have to do to move up within the company” and they struggle to give me specific goals and when to accomplish which is kind of a concern because I really like working here. But who knows if it will change.”
Peggy : “You know sometimes I just wonder how much people in the corporation really understand how much we contribute to the corporation.”
Adam : “Or even care about us. Me too. I think it’s kind of disheartening to deal with that. But, we should just probably just get back to work anyways.”
Peggy : “I guess so.”
Adam : “Talk to you later.”
Peggy: “Bye.”
Scenario 2-
(Takes place in the office. The two employees’ cubicles are side by side. As Chris gets up to leave his cubicle, he stops and sees Joan’s pile of books outside of her cubicle which is now outside of his cubicle. Chris has to step over her books to get to where he is going.)
Chris : I asked you before to move your stuff Joan.
Joan : I know Chris, but I really don’t have the time to do this. We have so much work to do I don’t have the time or space to clean this up.
Chris : We really need to talk about this.
Joan : I really don’t want to. You know if you had more things to do I don’t think you’d had the time to reprimand me about this.
Chris : It’s not about work. This is about respecting the workspace. We need to work this out.
Joan : I told you I don’t want to talk about this.
Chris then goes to Human Resources and knocks on door:
Chris : Hey Siobhan, do you have a minute.
Siobhan : Sure Chris, come on in. So how’s it going?”
Chris : Well you know, it’s going ok. Um, frankly I’m having a little bit of a problem with Joan.
Siobhan : Ooh I’m surprise to hear that. You two normally get along so well.
Chris : Yeah we usually do. But lately her desk the clutter is getting ridiculous. Like she has a pile of books that I have to step over, literally step over, in order to even get up to use the copy machine.
Siobhan : Wow, have you tried talking this out with her?
Chris : Yes I did earlier. But she got really upset and I just decided to come talk to you.
Siobhan : Well maybe its best if I schedule a meeting with both of you so we can work through this conflict together. How about 1 o’clock?
Chris : Sure that’ll work.
Siobhan : Great, see you then.
Chris : Ok thanks.
