Week#2-To Do List-CBS

Week 2: Introduction

Week 2 begins our study into today's concepts of organizational management focusing on the nature of management (art or science?), functions of management, the system approach, and classification of health care organizations, organizational form, and the clientele network.

Outcomes

The learner will:

· Critically analyze historical and current concepts through models of management in light of research and praxis of management.

· Understand the key components affecting and influencing health care management.

· Evaluate the relevance of management principles while relating management principles and theories in a practicum project.

· Critically analyze health care case studies and identify SWOT of management strategies.

Week 2: Discussion 1

Each school of management theory emphasizes one feature:

· Scientific management focuses on the work - improve productivity through improved processes.

· Human relations and behavioralism stress the worker-worker and worker-manager relationships.

· Structuralism emphasizes organizational design - function follows form.

· Management process theory focuses on the functions of the manager. Management science theory adds computer technology to the scientific method (#1).

The search for a management method of organizational integration that takes into account each of these essential features lends itself to the systems approach. This focuses on the organization as a whole (its internal and external components, the people in the organization, the work processes, and the overall organizational environment). This is to some degree today's concept of organizational management.

Discussion: Discuss the challenges and opportunities of the work setting as a total system.
