Selling Landfill Capacity

Problem: The local municipality is selling landfill capacity to neighboring communities to generate additional revenue for the community. The following specifications are known about the facility:

* 30 acres are reserved for use by neighboring communities

* The volume of waste that can go into the landfill will be limited to 1.2 million yd3

* The neighboring communities are required to deliver municipal solid waste (MSW) at a density of 625 lb/yd3

(a) How much revenue can the landfill generate if it charges $35/ton for the waste received from the neighboring communities? Show all work.

Solution:

Revenue for 30 acre plot = 1.2 x 106 yd3 x 625 lb x 1 ton x $35 = $13,125,000 yd3 2,000 lb ton

(b) If the landfill purchases a compressor capable of delivering 1,575 lb/yd3, how much additional revenue can the landfill generate? Show all work.

Solution:

Revenue for 30 acre plot = 1.2 x 106 yd3 x 1,575 lb x 1 ton x $35 = $33,075,000 yd3 2,000 lb ton

Therefore, additional revenue = $33,075,000  $13,125,000 = $19,950,000

(c) In a separate project for a different community, what pressure does the neighboring city need to apply to the refuse to deliver a compressed waste to the landfill at 600 lb/yd3? Refer to the diagram below.

Solution:

Applied pressure = 40 psi

(d) The landfill has received approval to purchase another compression unit. At what pressure must the landfill operate the compressor to get a bulk density of 1,000 lb/yd3?
