Assignment 2: Lifecycle Assessment

Background:

One of the challenges we have for adopting change is the existing materials, products and processes that

surround us. As such, it is important to consider the concept of “imbedded resources” of the existing and

replacement products through a lifecycle assessment. As example is the replacement of a functioning CFL

lightbulb with an LED lightbulb – the LED bulb is more energy efficient in its operating stage but it required

resources to produce and transport while the CFL requires resources to dispose of, so the embedded

resources in these products need to be considered as part of a lifecycle assessment to understand the

environmental impact of such an upgrade.

Expanding on assignment 1, you will consider the climate change impact of your energy consumption and

the benefit (from a lifecycle standpoint) of the upgrades/changes you highlighted in Deliverable 3 from

Assignment 1 (namely, products to reduce your energy demand). You MUST select one category of

replacement (ie. lighting, a major appliance, a small household appliance, etc.) to evaluate. You MUST

consider more than one alternative options that has some significant differences from one another.

Scope:

Within the scope of a LCA (see diagram below) – you must complete stage 1, 2, and 3 (ONLY as far as

calculating CO2e), and 4. All information MUST be based on your local circumstance (unless highlighted

in limitation). Scope MUST include manufacturing, use (specific to you based on Assignment 1), transport,

and disposal.

Deliverables:

1. Goal & Scope Definition is clearly explained for the selected changes including potential

limitation.

2. LCIA data table and flow chart showing the updated information and clearly showing all

calculations. (If LCIA exist for the products you’re looking to upgrade – these can be use for the

manufacturing stage but you must consider your own impact based on transportation, use, and

disposal. Be sure to consider local aspects of these and reference all your sources).

3. Interpretation (stage 4) of LCA related to CO2e impact for the changes highlights and

determination of whether the changes is beneficial from a CO2e perspective.

Submit a WORD version of your report via A2L by February 19 @ 11:59 pm.

Maximum 1000 words (2-3 pages) NOT including charts, graphs, tables, images, and appendices.
