INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY

Writing Assignment #1: Material and Nonmaterial Culture Due Date: Wednesday, March 1st

Hypothesis: What if- you and your friends have invented a sophisticated device that opens a vortex into the space continuum that allows you to travel to parallel worlds during the same year, same earth, but each with different dimensions. You and your fellow “Sliders” have just recently traveled to a parallel Earth that allows you and your fellow travelers to enjoy the peace, serenity, and tranquility that this particular world has to offer for you to rest, relax, regroup, and reflect on the past Earths that you have encountered.

Task: With the use of your sociological imagination, describe the more important material and nonmaterial aspects of the culture of your given society. What differences did you experience on this Earth compared to you own Earth (cultural context and components of culture)? What comparisons (if any) can be made between these parallel worlds (diversity of cultures)? What lessons of culture have you learned from traveling to this alternate Earth (your constructed reality of society)?

Parameters: 1) The paper must be typed and a paper copy must be turned in (I will not accept electronically submitted papers). 2) The paper should be a minimum of 4 pages double-spaced in Times New Roman12 font. 3) Let you “voice” speak for the streams of consciousness that flows from your reservoir of knowledge. In other words, free think and let the steams of conscience come forth from the unconscious! 4) This assignment is worth 33 1/3 points and is due Wednesday, March 1st. PLEASE, NO EXCEPTIONS!
